ALEXEY SHIROV
(born Jul-04-1972) Latvia (citizen of Spain)

[what is this?]
Alexey Dmitrievich Shirov was born on July 4th, 1972, in Riga, Latvia. He became the World Champion (under 16) in 1988, the World Vice-Champion (under 20) in 1990, and achieved the title of International Grandmaster in 1992. His aggressive and imaginative style has made him one of the crowd favorites throughout his career. Shirov is the winner of numerous international tournaments: Biel 1991, Madrid 1997 (shared first place with Veselin Topalov), Ter Apel 1997, Monte Carlo 1998, Merida 2000, just to name a few. In 1998 he defeated Vladimir Kramnik in a ten-game match that was intended to select a challenger for World Champion Garry Kasparov. Unfortunately, the plans for the Kasparov match were squelched when sufficient financial backing could not be found.

In 1994 Alexey married an Argentine Verónica Alvarez, moved to Tarragona, and became a citizen of Spain. Although he still plays for Spain, he currently resides in Lithuania, married to Lithuanian GM Victoria Cmilyte.

May-15-08   The Rocket: Has Shirov ever defeated Karpov in classical chess?
May-29-08   crazy monk: Re: Chessbase breaking news 5/29.

Yes Shirov deserves to play with Topalov if Kamsky back out. Beside, it's going to be a more exciting match this way.

jon01: With this short press release I would like to bring attention to the following facts:

1. In spite of having passed all the possible deadlines, FIDE still has not announced the venue of the match Topalov-Kamsky. That means that the match should normally take place in Bulgaria because the Lvov offer seems not to have been materialized.

2. Mr. Gata Kamsky has declared that he does not wish to play in Bulgaria. According to the match regulations he should be replaced by me in this case.

3. It is absolutely clear that the silence and uncertainty should end and the firm decision about the forthcoming match should be taken. Nobody can wait forever and this concerns the reserve players as well.

Augalv: Alexei Shirov replies to Gata Kamsky
Last week Alexei Shirov published a press release asking FIDE to resolve the crisis surrounding special Challengers Match between Gata Kamsky and Veselin Topalov. Kamsky's representative replied, and then FIDE came up with a decision on the venue in Lvov, Ukraine. "This is exactly what I wanted with my press release five days ago," says Shirov in his new press release.

Alexei Shirov's press release:

"I do not quite understand why Mrs. Kamskaya used such words as "Shirov's disturbing rumours" in her answer. I think I was just operating with public facts such as Mrs. Kamskaya's communication with FIDE earlier this year. And, of course, Mrs. Kamskaya knows that both Rustam and Gata Kamsky talked to me about the matter in April during the Russian league, so once again, no rumours involved.

Of course, it is very important for the players and the Chess World in general that FIDE has finally resolved the situation. This is exactly what I wanted with my press release five days ago".

Augalv: Shirov had a chance to play Kasparov for the world title in 1998 but he refused because he considered the prize fund to be too low. What should he have done? should he have played anyway or refusing to play was the right decision?

Woody Wood Pusher: I saw this post in the Kramnik page and thought you guys might enjoy it....

"Drawnik is preparing his retirement speech right now, his has a team of the finest writers assembled and it will bring a tear to the eye of his most hardened critic to hear how he battled tirelessly through illness to give Shirov his rightful match with Kasparov and how, with millions of chess fans looking on, he fought tooth and claw to rematch Kasparov.

Only he Drawnik could unite the chess titles and after disposing of the evil Topalov without visiting the bathroom even once he sacrificed his career by defending the championship in a tournament where everyone was against him and for some reason they were immune to the awesome power of his super-Petroff attacking opening!

With nowhere to turn Drawnik offered an unprecedented 10 draws in a row and 'lent' Anand the title so he could play with it in his sandpit while Drawnik the father of chess looked on lovingly and painting. Who would have believed when Drawnik asked for his title back Anand refused to hand it over, even when Drawnik explained the loan was up and he would forefit his video rental card if he continued! what a calamity!"

Pretty sad how you tried to make Kramnik seem like a hypocrite and a liar with that childishly written post yet it is you who is the liar.

Well after checking the poll results it seem like in most of the Cg.com users' opinion, Shirov made the wrong decision.
