| akhc: <alexmagnus: <akhc> not really. Today there are much more strong players. Look at this that way: in 1990, a 10th best player was 100-150 points below the highest rated one. Today the distance is about 65 points> the point I am making is that judit is still relatively speaking in the top echelons of the game. I don't really rate humpy getting past 2600 as a sign that she's as strong as judit nor do I think she has the same potential. nor would I rate hou in the same league till she gets past 2700. |

| YifanFan: Judit Polgar (and her sisters) were trailblazers for which they will always be unique. I agree that Yifan cannot be spoken of in the same breath as Polgar just yet. Although she has been making steady progress and has defeated several senior grandmasters, she is still two or three levels from the top echelon. I expect that we will know more of what she is capable in two or three years. For any 14 year old to have a near 2600 ELO and GM title does put her in the top echelon of juniors. She will appear in the FIDE top juniors list at about number 13 in the October list. |

would Hou Yifan automatically become a grandmaster if she won it anyway? Ingberg |

<would Hou Yifan automatically become a grandmaster if she won it anyway?> If Yifan defeats Koneru Humpy (by drawing or winning her next game), she receives another Grandmaster norm for reaching the final match. This would definitely make her a Grandmaster as she already has two GM norms, and possibly a third. If she wins the WWCC, she would be entitled to a Grandmaster title even without any of her other Grandmaster norms. However, FIDE is already calling her "GM-elect", and this could only be because Zhao Xue has been confirmed as the third Grandmaster in the Isbank Ataturk Women Masters (2008) (details in her bio). |

| ingberg: Hi, how is it possible for Yifan to gain a GM norm at an event in this case isbank-ataturk based on someone else (ie Zhao Xue) becoming a grandmaster some time after the event? Technically Zhao Xue was not a "GM" at the time. I have never understood the thinking behind this. |
|
Sep-10-08 |
| alexapple: <ingberg>: Actually, Zhao Xue already become a GM after 2007 North Ural. FIDE just delayed the ratification for almost 1 year. So in Turkey Ataturk tournament, Hou actually met 3 GMs, Zhu Chen, Cramling and Zhao Xue. |

| YifanFan: <ingberg>
My understanding is that a Grandmaster title (or any other title) is awarded with a date of effect that is related to performance OTB and tournament conditions that are in effect whether retrospectively or not, and excludes time taken for bureaucratic processing of Grandmaster title applications. Zhao Xue's Grandmaster title took months to be ratified, but when it was, it was ratified from a date <prior to> the Isbank Masters, making her a Grandmaster retrospective to the Isbank Tournament. That therefore makes her the third Grandmaster at that tournament and provided Yifan with the last condition she needed to acquire the Grandmaster title herself. |

| Whitehat1963: How soon before she's the second best woman chessplayer in the world? |
|

| Strafe: We'll have to wait and see tomorrow! At least by then we'll have a clearer picture. Some people have fantasized about a Kasparov-Carlsen match. Something a little bit more likely is a Hou v JuditPolgar in few yrs time.lol |

| PetShopB: whats her live rating now, is it near 2600 ? |
|
Sep-12-08 |
| akhc: her current live rating is 2585. to get to 2600 she'll have to get to the final and beat kosteniuk 4/4 :D when she would then achieve a rating of 2603. humpy's live rating is something like 2615 at the moment so she won't be overtaken by hou in the next list whatever happens now. |

| PetShopB: By Frank “Boy” Pestaño
"Hou Yifan. Don‘t look now but Wesley So has unofficialy lost his claim to fame as the youngest GM in the world. That status now belongs to the Chinese sensation Hou Yifan born Feb. 27, 1994 and 141 days younger than Wesley. And, she is a girl! Just this month , Fide referred to her as a “GM-elect”, indicating that her Atatürk norm (2nd) had been confirmed. This means that Hou Yifan has qualified for the title of GM last month (3rd norm) in the World Juniors, where she finished tied at third, at the age of 14, making her one of the youngest GMs in history and the youngest female. | kwi: In any case, she's for sure a GM-elect now (regardless whether that Turkish tournament is counted) since she is in the final of WWCC, and thus receives yet another 9-game GM norm. |

| chancho: She just might beat Kosteniuk to become world champ. |

|
| DCP23: <chancho: She just might beat Kosteniuk to become world champ.> To become world champ she needs to beat the winner of Anand-Kramnik, at the very least. She'll become Women's world champ (FIDE KO-version) if she beats Kosteniuk ;) |
|

| playerXchess: <To become world champ she needs to beat the winner of Anand-Kramnik, at the very least. She'll become Women's world champ (FIDE KO-version) if she beats Kosteniuk ;)> Really!?! She's not gonna play the winner of Anand-kramnik on Saturday! You spoiled my dreams now. |

| chancho: <DCP23> Dude, you knew I was not talking about the men's world championship. But nice one anyway. :-) |

| alexmagnus: Hehe, as for the men's WC, isn't the women's WC normally automatically seeded in the men's World Cup? Though I guess it will be the women's WC of 2009 who will be seeded and not that of 2008... |
|
Sep-12-08
|
| alexmagnus: Ah, I see the Women's World Championship is played once in two years, not each year... So if Hou beats Kosteniuk it will not only be the title but also a ticket to the men's World Cup 2009. |

| strategy11: I think it's unwise for all of us to make any comments we may soon regret saying.lets admit the fact that another youth has been doin well and currently making a buzz as of late.let time decide and dictates its intended destiny for this young lass.as of now its better to "observe" this skilled lass to prove her worth!! surely the likes of morphy, capablanca and fisher could never be compared to. but who knows maybe a 2nd judit polgar may surprise us! :-) |
