KONERU HUMPY
(born Mar-31-1987) India

[what is this?]
Koneru Humpy was born in Gudivada, near Vijayawada, in Andhra Pradesh and started playing chess when she was 5 years old. She has won four World Championships, including the World Girls Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and World Girls Junior championships. She has participated in two Women's World Chess Championships: in 2006 in Ekaterinburg, she advanced to the second round and in 2008 in Nalchik, to the fifth round, before bowing out, effectively coming equal third in the competition.

Humpy acquired her IM title in 1999, and in May 2002, she achieved her 3rd GM Norm in the Elekes Memorial Grandmaster tournament in Budapest. At the age of 15 years 1 month and 27 days, she became the youngest woman to become an international grandmaster. In October of 2007, she became the second female player ever (Judit Polgar was the first) to cross the 2600-Elo mark on the FIDE World Rating List.

Jan-26-08   bharatiy: Humpy will be in negative, with tomorrows game against the leader, I don't think she can get much there. would have loved a much better performance. Next time! Best luck to her!!
Jan-28-08   VishyFan: Humpy had a forgettable tournament with losses to L'Ami, Smeets & Spoelman and win against Krasenkow ended up with a score of 5.5/13...

She will lose 8.6 ELO from this tournament......

Surprisingly she is not participating in the Indian National 'A' championship....

any idea where she is playing next?

Jan-28-08   ajit: <<Unfortunately, the latter showed a total disregard for the interests of her colleagues or the tournament, and calmly halved out with the white pieces, in barely an hour. This handed Movsesian first place on a plate, and left Bacrot and Short high and dry>>

Ohh..like it never happened before, the tournament leader happy to just draw..

<<although Short at least had a small edge from the opening and could have tried for more, had there been any incentive>>

So all the blame is on Humpy for a 'disastrous end' to group B.

I think CHESSBASE needs to get his tongue out of SHORT's..

Jan-29-08   VishyFan: <<Unfortunately, the latter showed a total disregard for the interests of her colleagues or the tournament, and calmly halved out with the white pieces, in barely an hour. This handed Movsesian first place on a plate, and left Bacrot and Short high and dry>> From when does a chess player have to think about the other players in the tournament? This is hillarious and stupidity to the extreme...
Feb-05-08   VishyFan: Where is Humpy playing next?

She's not in the Indian National 'A' nor she is listed to be participating in the Aeroflot Chess (so far... Harika is listed)...

Feb-08-08   VishyFan: A brief interview by Humpy....

http://www.hindu.com/2008/02/08/sto...

<Humpy would be leaving for Vadodara in the third week of February where she will be training along with her ONGC teammates for the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board’s inter-institutional tournament scheduled for March.

“My emphasis will be on the round-robin category 13 tournament in Spain in April and the women’s World championship at San Luis (Argentina) in June.>

Mar-28-08   bharatiy: Humpy is doing OK in Kolkata open
Apr-05-08   VishyFan: Humpy finished 6th in Kolkatta open and gains 0.1 ELO.....

Any idea if the PSPB tournament will be considered for rating changes?

Next up, Humpy will play in the Ruy Lopez round-robin tournament in Spain...... http://ruylopez.juntaextremadura.ne...

Apr-12-08   yalie: With a 2715 performance in the Ruy lopez tournament, Humpy is quite easily the second strongest female chess player. A few more performances like this and we can start talking about a Polgar - Humpy match.
Apr-14-08   VishyFan: Humpy gains 11.4 ELO from the RuyLopez tournament....

With the 0.1 from Kolkatta open, she has 11.5 ELO pending for the next rating list...

But before July, she will participate in the World Championship...

WannaBe: She has 11.5 ELO?!?! Jeeze... even my rating is about 100 times of that!!
Apr-15-08   VishyFan: <WannaBe: She has 11.5 ELO?!?! Jeeze... even my rating is about 100 times of that!!> dude, read the post completely before coming to absurd conclusions......

I said "11.5 ELO pending for the next rating list"...

May-20-08   VishyFan: Humpy finished joint first in the Mumbai Open Tournament with a score of 9.0/11 and will gain 7.3 ELO from here....

She is set to gain 18.8 ELO (Ruy Lopez, Kolkatta & Mumbai) for the July rating list and her rating would be 2622, a personal best...

May-20-08   yalie: Thanks for the calculations <Vishyfan>. For some reason I thought she didnt get any points from Mumbai despite finishing jt. first. I guess she needs about 10-15 more points to make the Top 100 list.
May-22-08   VishyFan: <yalie> For the April List, the 100/101 positions were occupied by players with a rating of 2628... I am assuming that this number will go up come July, it may be around 2635..., in that case Ganguly might be in the top 100 and yes, your are right she needs 10-15 to her provisional rating of 2621, Humpy needs to have one more strong performance if she has to get there in July.....

Augalv: Humpy opts out of chess Olympiad

Sheelpa Kothari
New Delhi, Jun 16 (PTI) Koneru Humpy, world's top-ranking Grandmaster behind Judith Polgar in women's category, has decided to give the chess Olympiad a miss to be staged this November in Dresden, Germany, despite being given her maiden opportunity to play for the men's team.

The 21-year-old queen of 64 squares, who had been spearheading Indian challenge in women's section, was keen to represent the country in the open section, but when selected to be a part of the men's team this year, she preferred to play in her promised FIDE events and earn some ELO rating points.

"It was a difficult choice but I'll have to skip it. I had already confirmed some competition in Europe -- European Club Cup in Greece and Cap de Agde in France -- eight months before. Dates of these tournaments have now been postponed to late October and the Olympiad is in November," Humpy told PTI.

The youngest woman ever to become a Grandmaster by beating Polgar's record by 3 months, Humpy's ratings have been on the rise and she was selected to play in the men's team in Olympiad by virtue of being among the top-five GMs of the country.

She crossed ELO 2600 mark in October 2007 and will be ELO 2622 when the next rating list is issued by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

For Humpy, who has toppled Anatoly Karpov twice in rapid games, the opportunity to play on the same board as Karpov and Bacrot in a competition for players of the calibre of ELO 2700 was hard to resist. PTI

2622 isn't a bad rating, with that she is ahead of for example Dortmund participants Nepomniachtchi and Gustafsson.

Jul-06-08   Bobsterman3000: It would be great to have another woman of the younger generation cross 2700. Polgar can't play forever...

ahmadov: <Bobsterman3000: It would be great to have another woman of the younger generation cross 2700. Polgar can't play forever...> I hoped Koneru would be the next female 2700+ player soon but unfortunately, she will not be one at least this year, especially after her poor performance in North Urals Cup... She probably had serious reasons for playing 114 points below her 2622 FIDE rating in that tournament...
Aug-04-08   Blackreptile: I think Koneru ought to change her trainer: her father! about 2100 Elo who follows her in all the tournaments! may be some psychological liberty on the girl would be benefic, as one can guess looking at her almost permanent sad mood...

Red October: If I am not mistaken she competes in the Women's World Championship due to start tomorrow
Aug-28-08   yalie: yes she does - and she benefits from the withdrawal of the Georgian players - since she gets a second round bye. Of course a few other player also benefit - like Matveeva gets a first round bye. But a second round bye is a big deal IMO. At this point she is the clear favorite - though anything can happen in a KO.

Red October: Humpy wins her first round game
Sep-08-08   yalie: Humpy through to the semis, where she plays Hou Yifan. Should be the matchup of the championships. Yifan has a better support group from all the Chinese (Xu Yuhua, Luan Rufei, Ju Wenjun, Xue Zhao, Shen Yang, Jilin Zhang & Tan Hongyi, most of whom are staying back to help. I think Humpy "only" has her dad who is rated around 2100.
