Father’s Day, 3rd Sunday in June.  This year, it will be celebrated on 19th June. Father's Day is a special day for everyone! We use this day to honor our fathers all over the world! The origin of Father's Day is not clear. Some say that it began with a church service in West Virginia in 1908. Others say the first Father's Day ceremony was held in Vancouver, Washington.

However, the idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. 

Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. 

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.

Father's Day Around the World:
Traditionally, roses are a part of Father's Day (nope, they aren't just for moms!). Red roses are worn on Father's Day to signify that one's father is living, while white roses mean one's father has died. 

Father's Day in Canada, the U.K. and the United States is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. In Australia, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September.

Many Catholics call St. Joseph's Day, on March 19th, Father's Day because Joseph was the father of Jesus.
