Never attribute to ignorance, stupidity, or forgetfulness what can be adequately explained by malice.

The technology worker and his inflated sense of his intelligence

The hubris of the average tech worker never ceases to amaze me. It seems that the majority of tech workers believe that they are somehow so enlightened and above average that they are fit to issue opinions on subjects far outside their field of expertise. Given that most of these guys are shockingly ill-prepared to deal with subjects outside of their expertise, it still amazes me that they continue to issue their half-assed opinions publically, revealing their shocking ignorance outside a narrow field of knowledge.
Take this gem issued by none other than our own TDS. It is clear from both the diary and the comments that TDS has little to no conception of the financial instrument discussed in the article he linked to, yet he still condemns an instrument that he does not understand, based on a Bloomberg article that gives only an overview of these particular instruments.

"Carbon Neutral"

So the company I work for has decided to "go green" in order to "save the Earth". (The real reason is so that they can brag in their press releases about being "carbon neutral", but I digress). They had an informational session (which I skipped but heard about later) to explain how our company can become "carbon neutral" in 2008 by purchasing carbon offsets to counterbalance the effect that our company's pollution has on the environment. This at first struck me as one of the fucking stupidest things I've ever heard, but the more I think about it, the more I like it - let's apply that logic to other areas of life and see where it takes us.

At work we have a suggestion box (actually an anonymous feedback form on the corporate intranet), and every few months the management team reviews the suggestions and drafts up a document containing each suggestion and the management team's official response to it. They then send this document to all employees to show us how much they care about our feedback. Usually these are fairly pointless and boring, but this time around there was one that caught my eye. I shit you not, this is the actual quote copied and pasted (emphasis mine):
We need to be more careful in making remarks about other nationalities clothes, belief, food or smell of their food. There is a thin line between "freedom of speech" and "discrimation". If "freedom to speak" results in hurting other people's sensibilities, then it turns into "discrimation". We belong to a multi-cultural company in a multi-cultural country. Let's start appreciating our officemates uniqueness based on racial origin since this is what our core value "Respect for Others" is all about.

Don't copy that floppy

Okay, so since my last few diaries have been self-absorbed whiney emo-fests, I figured I'd try to lighten up for a change and post something funny. Anybody remember the Don't copy that floppy propaganda campaign from the early 90's? Some bugger got a fairly high quality rip of it from somewhere and put it on craptube. The best part (imo) is a couple of minutes in when the "rapper" runs out of things to say, seemingly mid-sentence, and so abruptly shuts up, but decides to keep going with his odd seizure/dance for another awkward 10 seconds or so until they cut to the next scene. Mildly amusing for the first two or three minutes, however your IQ may drop sharply if you actually watch it through to the end.

Legacy of Ashes by Tim Weiner is a fascinating history of the CIA. I highly recommend it to everyone!
Before reading this book, I knew very little about the CIA. I knew what the acronym stood for (Centralized Informational Armofthegovernment), I knew they put out a nice collection of data on every country in the world, and I knew they would offer jobs to just about any idiot off the street. I turned down an offer to join the agency after college. I had regretted turning down that job for years, but have changed my thinking after reading this book.
