David Riske - Riske left the team on its...
David RiskeRiske left the team on its road trip in Chicago because of his ailing right elbow. He is scheduled for surgery Sept. 23 to have a bone spur removed. Riske last pitched Sept. 7 when he gave up four runs in an inning against San Diego. He had a cortisone shot in the elbow the next day but couldn't return to the mound. Riske, a nine-year veteran, is 1-2 with a 5.31 ERA in 45 appearances in his first season in Milwaukee. He signed a three-year deal worth $13 million to bolster the bullpen but has struggled. He went on the disabled list in May and June with a hyperextended elbow.
Humberto Quintero - Quintero left Monday's...
Humberto QuinteroQuintero left Monday's 6-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs after fouling a pitch off his left knee during his at-bat in the sixth inning, according to the Astros' official Web site. Quintero, who was replaced by Brad Ausmus in the defeat, was diagnosed with a bruised left knee and is listed as day-to-day. The catcher is batting .223 (33-for-148) with two homers and 10 RBIs in 52 games this season.
Milton Bradley - Bradley was out of the...
Milton BradleyBradley was out of the Texas lineup due to a left wrist injury, then struck out as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning of an 11-8 win over Detroit. Bradley has missed seven of the last nine starts because of wrist and back problems. He is among the AL hitting leaders with a .324 average to go along with 22 homers and 74 RBIs.
Hong-Chih Kuo - Kuo didn't report any left...
Hong-Chih KuoKuo didn't report any left elbow problems immediately after pitching Sunday, but he did have discomfort in his triceps Monday, according to the Dodgers' official Web site. This particular setback could cast a cloud on Kuo's availability for the Dodgers down the stretch and beyond. "From what I'm told, if we wait a few more days, it'll be the same result," manager Joe Torre said. "He's not out of the mix, but we have to be a little more aware of his usage." Kuo was the losing pitcher Sunday in Colorado after allowing the winning run in the 10th inning. He is 5-3 with a 2.14 ERA in 42 games this season.
Takashi Saito - Saito made his first...
Takashi SaitoSaito made his first appearance since being diagnosed with a sprained ligament in his right elbow two months ago, pitching a scoreless eighth inning in Los Angeles' 8-2 win against Pittsburgh on Monday night. Saito, the Dodgers' closer until he was hurt, walked one and struck out two while facing four batters. Manager Joe Torre wanted to use Saito in what he called "a non-stressful situation" his first time out, and the Dodgers led 8-0 at the time. Saito won't pitch Tuesday, but Torre hopes to use the right-hander on Wednesday - again, Torre hopes it won't be in a close game. Saito is 3-3 with a 2.13 ERA, and has converted 17 of 20 saves in 40 games.
Jeremy Guthrie - The Orioles placed Guthrie...
Jeremy GuthrieThe Orioles placed Guthrie on the 15-day disabled list because of an impingement in his right shoulder on Monday. The move was retroactive to September 6. Guthrie, who is 10-11 with a 3.57 ERA in 29 starts this season, has compiled a 7.56 ERA in losing his last three starts, but hasn't pitched since Aug. 29 at Tampa Bay. Manager Dave Trembley told the Orioles' official Web site that the team could consider shutting Guthrie down for the rest of the year. "We're getting to that point," Trembley said Friday. "What's he missed, 14 days? He's got to throw bullpens. ... You've got to get out on the mound and throw."
Dmitri Young - Young could be done for the...
Dmitri YoungYoung could be done for the season with a strained left hip. He hasn't played since being activated from the disabled list a week ago, and manager Manny Acta said Monday it doesn't look as if Young will be able to return to the field. "Done for the year? That remains to be seen," Young said. "See what happens tomorrow, the next day, whatever, go from there." Young hit .280 with four homers and 10 RBIs in only 150 at-bats in 2008, missing time with a lower back injury and while receiving treatment for diabetes. His hip problem came while running the bases during a rehab assignment at short-season Single-A Vermont.
Robinson Cano - Cano was benched again by...
Robinson CanoCano was benched again by the New York Yankees on Monday night for not hustling after a ball the previous day. Cody Ransom started at second Monday night in the opener of a four-game series against the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox. Cano's status will be "a daily decision," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Cano was yanked from Sunday's game against Tampa Bay after he was late retrieving Cliff Floyd's hard grounder that caromed into shallow right field. Cano didn't immediately chase the ball after it deflected off the glove of diving first baseman Jason Giambi, and Floyd beat right fielder Xavier Nady's throw to second for a double. "Obviously, continue to discuss some things with Robbie and we'll move forward," Girardi said.
Edwar Ramirez - Ramirez began serving a...
Edwar RamirezRamirez began serving a two-game suspension for throwing at Baltimore's Kevin Millar on July 30. Ramirez was originally suspended for three games, but he appealed and the penalty was reduced Monday to two games. The reliever was also fined an undisclosed amount.
Brandon McCarthy - McCarthy left his start...
Brandon McCarthyMcCarthy left his start against the Detroit Tigers on Monday in the first inning with a strained flexor tendon on his pitching hand. McCarthy got the first two outs, then began shaking his hand after delivering a pitch to Magglio Ordonez. Rangers manager Ron Washington and team trainers ran the mound to check on McCarthy, who could not return to the game. The Rangers will monitor McCarthy's condition over the next few days to determine whether surgery will be necessary. Luis Mendoza came on to replace McCarthy.
Hideki Matsui - The Yankees said it was...
Hideki MatsuiThe Yankees said it was possible Matsui would have surgery on his left knee before the season ends. Hitless in his last 16 at-bats, Matsui was out of the lineup for the third straight game on Monday - the opener of the Yankees' four-game home series against the Chicago White Sox - though manager Joe Girardi said the slugger's knee hadn't swelled up. Matsui was on the disabled list with left knee inflammation from June 23 to Aug. 18.
Kenny Rogers - Tigers manager Jim Leyland...
Kenny RogersTigers manager Jim Leyland said Monday that Rogers won't pitch again this season. Rogers didn't speak with the media when he arrived at the ballpark about an hour before game time. He is a free agent at the end of the season and the Tigers are unlikely to re-sign the 43-year-old veteran of 20 major league seasons. He allowed seven runs in 4 2-3 innings on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox and had given up at least six runs in four straight starts. He finishes the season with a 9-13 ERA and 5.70 ERA in 30 starts.

Nate McLouthMcLouth hit his 25th homer - his previous major league high was 13 last season - as the Pirates beat the Cardinals 7-2 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. John Maine - Maine would be willing to work...
John MaineMaine would be willing to work out of the New York Mets' problematic bullpen - maybe even as the closer - if he returns this season from a right shoulder injury. Maine tossed a ball 35 times on flat ground Monday and hopes to return during next week's season-ending homestand, he said before New York's game against the Washington Nationals. He is 10-8 with a 4.18 ERA in 25 starts this season. But Maine is open to relieving if it gets him back on the field.

David WrightWright matched a career high with four hits on Sunday, driving in three runs and hitting two homers, but the Mets lost 7-4 to the Braves. Wright's 12th career multihomer game and third this season gave him a career-high 31 home runs, surpassing last season's total by one.
