Microsoft Plays Dirty With Gmail

A friend sent out the latest clip for Ghost Humpers, our episodic mockumentary. Downloading the quicktime movie from Gmail gave me a compressed version. I thought that was odd. After a little searching, I found an option to download attachments as a zip file. Simply replace "disp=attd" with "disp=zip" in the attachment URL. IE7 was changing this to "disp=indzip" for the same result; on its own. This piqued my curiosity.

I know you're all going to think I'm manic, but I'm not.
I sent the following email just now to Angela Bonilla, who was my piano teacher in Vancouver.
Angela is from the South American nation of Colombia. She was embarrassed to tell me that; she said "Americans don't like Colombians", no doubt because of the cocaine smuggled from there. It is also known for its coffee.
It is a deeply troubled nation, having faced an insurgency from a guerilla organization known as FARC for several decades; there is some possibility that Venezuela and Ecuador might go to war with Colombia, because Colombia attacked a FARC encampment in Ecuadorian territory.
I'm not sure yet that I will pursue the course I outline in my letter to Angela, but I do know that I have been considering it in a serious way, in different forms, for about fifteen years.
I'm submitting this as a story, and not just a diary, in part because I hope for a more in-depth discussion than a diary would provoke, and in part because I invite those who read this to consider joining me.
Perhaps some of you can suggest solutions to the problems I discuss within.
Perhaps this story will be just the first in a series.

Fun with Inform 7

I've been playing with Inform version 7. What is Inform you may ask? Well it's compiler for the old z-machine VM, that was made popular by Infocom in the 1980's. You may have heard of interactive fiction, which was cool, but of course fancy graphics and sound killed the thing...
So of course, at k5, we like to bring the dead back to life, so we can rape it repeatedly!!
So before we get all crazy, you'll need the compiler, which you can get from here. It has a built in interpeter so you can play as you go along, and pretty good documentation, as long as you don't stray from their path.
For a stand alone Virtual Machine, I like Glulx, the nextgen player, which supports the old game files, you can download it here.

Regarding Two Security Holes in Scoop

As per suggestions contained in the FAQ:
Herein lies a report of two identified and as-of-yet uncorrected security flaws in Scoop. Enough detail will be provided to assist admins in investigating and correcting the flaws, but it is the author's hope that the details of the flaws will be sufficiently obscured to prevent abuse by the undesirables.
Executive summary:
Through the exploitation of various unchecked privileged operations, attackers may be able to perform admin-level actions leading to data loss. Additionally, well-intentioned security measures combined with XSS vulnerabilities can be exercised to simulate admin-level action, resulting in data loss.

Kuro5hin Chopper: Everything That Can Go Wrong Will

Well this weekend we dropped the engine out of the red MR2, tore it down to the shortblock, changed out the headgasket, and put it back together.
I had a restful sleep and the next day we took the 5SFE engine out of the white one and bolted the 3SGTE into it. I started it up, pressed the gas, and drove to the moon on the 10 billion horsepower I had. Then my penis got really big from working on cars and I had a lot of sex while drinking and smoking.
If you haven't been following the Diary Section, the tag for the back story is Kuro5hin Chopper.

Driving for Maximum Fuel Efficiency

I'm strange. I love to measure things. I've used a GPS receiver to find the optimal parking situation at work, I measure the costs of meetings (based on estimates of what I think people make), and I've even measured the effects of different driving techniques and the resulting impact on fuel economy. Yes, I'm strange.
