Jeff KentThe Dodgers activated Kent from the 15-day disabled list Saturday - less than three weeks after the 40-year-old second baseman underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. Expected to be used mostly as a pinch-hitter in the final week of the regular season, there are no plans for the baseball's career home run leader among second basemen to play in the field during the remainder of the regular season.
Bengie MolinaMolina homered for the second consecutive game, had three hits and drove in four runs to help the Giants beat the Dodgers 7-1 on Friday. In the middle of a lineup that has struggled all season, Molina has put together one of his best years, batting .289 to go with 15 homers and a career-high 92 RBIs.
Randy WolfWolf allowed three hits in seven innings to help the Astros snap a five-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Wolf gave up one run and struck out seven to win for the third time in four starts this month. He beat the Pirates for the second time in 10 days and won his sixth straight decision against Pittsburgh.
Brett MyersMyers, who pitched a two-hitter in his last start, gave up five runs in his first 17 pitches before retiring a batter, and the Phillies went on to lost 14-8 to Florida on Friday. He wound up allowing 10 runs in four innings. Myers had only given up seven runs in his previous six starts, going 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA and pitching two complete games.
Jose Reyes - Reyes hit a leadoff homer and...
Barry ZitoZito took a shutout into the eighth inning and the Giants beat their rivals 7-1 on Friday night, slowing the Dodgers' drive toward a division title. The left-hander ended up allowing one run and six hits in 7 2-3 innings. Though much maligned for his dismal start to 2008 considering his hefty contract, Zito has righted the ship to a degree in the last month, going 4-1 with a 4.03 ERA in his last seven starts.
Carlos ZambranoAfter pitching the Cubs' first no-hitter in 36 years Sunday against Houston in Milwaukee, Zambrano allowed eight runs and six hits in just 1 2-3 innings Friday in a 12-6 loss - his shortest outing in two years. It also was the shortest start by a pitcher coming off a no-hitter since St. Louis' Bob Forsch lasted one inning at Pittsburgh in April 1978, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Carlos PenaThe Rays closed in on a playoff berth Friday night, beating the Minnesota Twins 11-1 behind Carlos Pena's homer and four RBIs. Pena, who has three homers and eight RBIs over his last four games, also drew a walk with the bases loaded in the second inning and finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs
Alexei RamirezRamirez hit the grand slam after the long at-bat, Dewayne Wise homered twice and Mark Buehrle pitched six effective innings as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-4 on Friday night. Ramirez, who has 19 homers and 70 RBIs this season, has three homers in his last seven games.
Adam KennedyKennedy capped a five-run first with a grand slam, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cubs 12-6 on Friday, slowing their march toward a second straight division title. Kennedy tied a career high with four hits while driving in five runs and scoring three, after acknowledging earlier that this will probably be his last season in St. Louis because his role has dwindled.
