Name: James Kulbacki . I prefer to go by "Jim".

Home: Cheyenne, Wyoming USA
Rating: about 1900, peak rating: 2155

Favorite player: You fill in the blank, chess players are my family! By the way, "Resignation Trap" is an anagram for Tigran Petrosian.

Before my first chess tournament, I came thoroughly prepared by reading Reuben Fine's "Basic Chess Endings" and a few other books by him which I could find in local book stores.

The result of my first tournament was a much-needed heavy dose of reality: four losses and one draw for a provisional rating of 992. I was disheartened, but I kept going to tournaments, as they provided me with a refuge away from the drudgeries of high school and my miserable family.

I also came to the conclusion that my World Championship title had to be postponed until 1981 at the earliest!

Conventional learning methods have rarely worked for me. Fate keeps pulling silly jokes on me: I studied works by Reuben Fine, and I ended up playing like Larry Fine. Larry Fine is the person on my avatar, for more information click here: http://www.stoogeworld.com/_Biograp... .

I specialize in collecting biographical and autobiographical books about chessplayers. I have at least one book on each of the following players: Michael Adams , Vladimir Alatortsev , Alexander Alekhine , Viswanathan Anand , Adolf Anderssen , Yuri Averbakh , Yuri Balashov , Sergey Vesevolodovich Belavenets , Alexander Beliavsky , Joel Benjamin , Pal Benko , Sidney Norman Bernstein , Arthur Bisguier , Joseph Henry Blackburne , Efim Bogoljubov , Isaac Boleslavsky , Viktor Bologan , Mikhail Botvinnik , David Bronstein , Jose Raul Capablanca , Magnus Carlsen , Rudolf Rezso Charousek , Maia Chiburdanidze , Mikhail Chigorin , Alexey Dreev , Fyodor Ivanovich Dus Chotimirsky , Billy Colias , Edgar Colle , Harlow Bussey Daly , Arnold Denker , Roman Dzindzichashvili , Max Euwe , Robert James Fischer , Salomon Flohr , Semyon Abramovich Furman , Nona Gaprindashvili , Boris Gelfand , Efim Geller , Aivars Gipslis , Svetozar Gligoric , Viktor Arsentievich Goglidze , Eduard Gufeld , Asa Hoffmann , Maria Ivanka-Budinsky , David Janowski , Xie Jun , Gata Kamsky , Anatoli Karpov , Garry Kasparov , Paul Keres , Alexander Khalifman , Ratmir Kholmov , Alexander Konstantinopolsky , Viktor Korchnoi , Alexander Kotov , Vladimir Kramnik , Viktor Kupreichik , Bent Larsen , Emanuel Lasker , Grigory Levenfish , Andre Lilienthal , Anatoly S Lutikov , Vladimir Andreevich Makogonov , Geza Maroczy , Frank James Marshall , Henrique Mecking , Vladas Ivanovich Mikenas , Anthony Miles , Paul Morphy , Miguel Najdorf , Rashid Gibiatovich Nezhmetdinov , Aron Nimzowitsch , John Nunn , Vasily Panov , Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian , Vladimir Petrov , Harry Nelson Pillsbury , Judit Polgar , Lev Polugaevsky , Lajos Portisch , Viacheslav Ragozin , Samuel Reshevsky , Richard Reti , Peter Arsenievich Romanovsky , Akiba Rubinstein , Anthony Santasiere , Carl Schlechter , Jennifer Shahade , Alexey Shirov , Nigel Short , Vladimir Simagin , Vasily Smyslov , Ivan Sokolov , Boris Spassky , Jonathan Speelman , Rudolf Spielmann , Howard Staunton , Leonid Stein , Wilhelm Steinitz , Alexey Suetin , Laszlo Szabo , Mark Taimanov , Mikhail Tal , Siegbert Tarrasch , Savielly Tartakower , Richard Teichmann , Jan Timman , Alexander Kazimirovich Tolush , Olaf Ulvestad , Milan Vidmar , Daniel Yanofsky , Frederick D Yates , Alexander Zaitsev , and Elmars Zemgalis .

If you have questions about these players (or others, for that matter) just ask! If you wish to contribute a book to my collection, please do!

As for the surname <Kulbacki>, for many years, I thought that it originated from the Polish word "kulbac" = "saddle" in English. However, a few years ago, out of curiosity, I found a website with my name on it, and I put it through an online Polish-to-English translation service. Its translation of "Kulbacki" (and I am a little embarrassed to admit this): "Halibut" !! See: http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kulbak... . For many years, I had always called weaker chessplayers "fish", but now I use "patzers".

Away from chess, I provide vehicle transportation for railroad employees, driving for Express Shuttle, Inc., along the I-25 corridor, from Casper, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado. If you click on one of these webcamera sites, there is a slight chance that you will see my black 2005 Suburban moving along: http://www.wyoroad.info/highway/web... in Casper. Or http://www.wyoroad.info/highway/web... in Bordeaux (a very windy place where many trucks get overturned).

For the weather in Cheyenne, just click here: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin... .

On March 17, 2007, I was a participant in the Wyoming Championship....of Burrito Eating! This was no ordinary burrito, it was a "Gutbuster" which weighs three pounds (1.36 kg). I finished fourth overall (no prize). In the following video, you can see me in the upper right of the screen (male-pattern baldness, white shirt), trying to scarf down this monstrous meal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCeJ... . There was no entry fee, and the burrito was free as well!

Resignation Trap: Oh, well, my prediction on page one of game nine was too far off the mark: Anand vs Kramnik, 2008 . However, I did get the position after four move right. I didn't get the opportunity to follow it live, and it was the most interesting game in the match, in my opinion :( My ...

Resignation Trap: Aronian's notes will probably appear soon in an issue of <New in Chess>. Karjakin's analysis barely scratched the surface. At first I thought that after 24.Qxg7, [DIAGRAM] that Black could defend with 24...fxe3. Wrong! After 25.Nxg5+ Kf5 (25...Kd6 26.Rxd5+!) ...

Resignation Trap: <whiteshark> Right! When somebody first uploaded this game, they put the round number in the fields where the name of the tournament and site should be. There are countless examples of this in our database.

Resignation Trap: <perkychesscat> In your line, after 39.Kf3, Black has 39...Rf2+ 40.Kxe3 Rxf1. White's passed pawns aren't advanced far enough to give Black any problems. While I'm here, here's a photo as Vishy was playing his Knight from g4 to e3: ...

Resignation Trap: Chetvertyu! Another Semi-Slav, but maybe Kramnik's team has conjured up something new. Botvinnik System ? Anti-Moscow? How about a Shirov-Shabalov Gambit? At any rate, let's hope for a good fight!

Apr-08-08   nescio: <Resignation Trap> I put the following question to User: phony benoni and he directed me to you:

"Do you have access to American chess magazines from the 1960's? I wonder if Bisguier ever commented on the strange game Bisguier vs A Matanovic, 1961. From move 60 onward Bisguier needlessly sacrificed his two remaining pieces for two black pawns and was mated by the two black knights because he still had a pawn left. He must have known that he couldn't draw that way. My question is: Did he really play these moves and if yes, why?"

Phony Benoni: <But I think it's quite possible that Bisguier did play that way. He may have been relying on Fine's <Basic Chess Endings>, which as I recall had some serious flaws in the analysis of 2Ns vs. P.>

I still think it's intriguing.

Resignation Trap: <nescio> That's a coincidence! I just looked through all the 1961 issues of <Chess Life> two nights ago! No mention of this endgame was made by anyone. I'll get back to you after I check <Chess Review> from the same period.
Jun-20-08   satch boogie: Hey <Resignation Trap> do you have any books on Anatoly Lutikov?

Resignation Trap: <satch boogie> I do have a book on Lutikov (in Russian), and I've made a collection of his games from it here: Game Collection: The Chess Heritage of Anatoly Lutikov . I still have about 20 games left to upload before it is complete.
Jun-21-08   satch boogie: <Resignation Trap> Thanks very much, I've recently been studying those games. I really like his games with the Kings Gambit, especially his victory over Korchnoi.

Fusilli: Hey, I just looked at your Sousse 1967 Interzonal game collection and saw no "round 1, game 1" game. Is that game missing from this database? Which game was it?

Also, do you know if there is a way to search for all games from a particular tournament? I'd like to get a listing of all Leningrad 1973 Interzonal games, but the only search engine I see on this website is for specific players.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but I was hospitalized for nine days and I am still in my recovery stage. An infection in my left middle toe went to the bone, and it had to be amputated :(.

There were six unplayed games in Sousse. Game #1 was to be Leonid Stein vs. Julio Bolbochan . Game #24 was to be Bolbochan-Gligoric and Game #36 was to have been Korchnoi-Bolbochan. Bolbochan never showed up, and it wasn't until late in the tournament that the news arrived about the Argentine Chess Federation's being unable to fund his trip to Tunisia. His opponents' wins were cancelled, and everyone received a bye.

Game #92 was Fischer-Geller (0-1, forfeit), Game #149 was Fischer-Hort (0-1, forfeit) and Game #168 was Larsen-Fischer (1-0, forfeit). Fischer's results were cancelled as he played less than half of his scheduled games, and more byes were given to the opponents he didn't face!

As for the Leningrad Interzonal, I don't know why nobody has made a collection of those games here. Maybe I'll take up the challenge.

Fusilli: <Resignation Trap>, very sorry about your toe, and best wishes. Thanks for the info about Sousse. I was a little surprised at the delay because I know you are a regular. Welcome back!

Hello <Jim>
I wanted to write something about the strange URL's you had problems to open ... but first of all I wish you "alles Gute und eine baldige Genese Herr Falle" (~ is similar to what Doc Palmer and Profesor Sana wrote) aswell.

In short: You recover the best you can, while I try to fix that links - sounds fair ^^

First of all I try to figure out the "Pudels Kern" of the prob you described:

a. could you give an example of an URL that caused trouble

b. can you tell what happened
(e.g. did you get an error, like file not found, can't access the page ...)

Post it here or on the player page, no problemo.

We will find a solution no matter how.

Take care, greetings from old Europe

PS: No need to hurry, today not much computer time for me (lol my English is horrible)

Aug-26-08   myschkin: . . .

Sorry, me is a dork!!

Don't answer I get an error myself :D

I will repost the links in another 'format'

Example of the Max Blau case:

The "raw" pic is here
http://www.jamd.com/search?assettyp...

I extracted it out of the page source, to get here:
http://cache.gettyimages.com/xc/325...

Finally put it in http://tinyurl.com/ to shorten <--Voila, here is the prob!

I load them up later :D

And good morning America^^

Sep-05-08   myschkin: . . .

Hope you will be around soon again. I stopped posting 'short' URL'S meanwhile :)

See you
