Mar-20-08   moronovich: Happy Birthday - And many many more to come !

Eric Schiller: Than you all for your birthday wishes. It wasn't a great day as I lost my usual web outlet and am looking for a new home for my articles and videos.

Nip is not my student. He's a bit old, as most of my students are 5-8 years old these days. Hopefully they will also rise to Master.

Nip is a student of Eric Hicks and Liina Vark and has been for years. He is one of many very talented young players in the Bay Area. Many of them are members here, as I encourage them to study games here.

Eric Schiller: I have some birthday presents for all of you. At www.chess.com I placed zip files of many excerpts from my books for free download. They are on their downloads page.
Mar-21-08   MichAdams: Eric, truly you are the gift that never stops giving.

refutor: <Eric Schiller> Do they have many open tournaments in Hawaii? I'd love to visit Hawaii and if there was a tournament there i could kill two birds with one stone, so to speak :)

Eric Schiller: <refutor> We have been trying to restart them, without success, alas. Maybe next year.

Eric Schiller: <aazqua> The amount of time most men waste with a razor is years of their life. I haven't shaved since I was 18.

timhortons: eric thanks for answering...that means nip has a handle here, maybe kibitzing incognito?
Mar-25-08   HeMateMe: Hi Eric. I was wondering if you had read Joel Benjamin's book "American Grandmaster"? Its kind of nice to see a chess bio of an american born player. The book has a lot of fun stories, and kind of fills in some gaps for those of us who grew up following chess in the 80s.

I think he mentions at the 1981 World Student Games you were either a player or team captain, and the others referred to you as "Gerry's friend", because you speak Russian, and were able to communicate with the great one.

This would be pre-world champion Kasparov. I was just wondering what thoughts you might have about those days, your first meeting with Kasparov, etc..Benjamin says that at the world junior championship the year before, Kaspy was playing Benjamin at odds 5--3 in five minute blitz, and taking some cash off of the western players.

BTW, never heard of Kasparov being a college student--did the Kremlin just set him up somewhere with a basket weaving class (Tal and Spassky were "journalism" majors...) and how many languages are you able to speak?

  Eric Schiller: <hehateme>
1. I haven't read it yet. On my summer reading list.

2. I met Kasparov before that, at the 1980 Olympiad in Malta where I was arbiter. Batsford asked me to speak to him, since I speak Russian, and we became friends.

3. I speak Russian, German and some Khmer (Cambodian) and Hawaiian Creole. But when I travel I try to pick up some of the local language, as it is very useful in pubs. I wish my Spanish was better, as it is useful in my neighborhood, but am limited pretty much to ordering in restaurants and greetings. And reading chess books.

May-09-08   moronovich: right <Eric> "Dos cervezas" is the most important spanish phrase to know :)

Eric Schiller: <moronovich> I'm near San Francisco. So it is frequently "tres cervesas" or even "quatro cervesas" And sometimes you need a burrito on the side. We rely on the amazing site www.burritoeater.com
May-10-08   MaxxLange: <never heard of Kasparov being a college student> AFAIK, he may hold honorary degrees, but was playing chess full-time as a youth and did not get a normal degree. He probably went to some University lectures, and had various tutors from the USSR sports school, and from his home, but they weren't paying for him to write term papers!
May-25-08   kobesarmy: what is your method on teaching mr. schiller? eg. analyzing games, taking alook at weakenesses and focusing on those areas

are you taking new students?

Jun-07-08   Swifty31: Thought I would write a note thanking you for Killer Chess Tactics. Its a very thorough book on tactics and combinations. Are you going to write any more tactics training books?

Premium Chessgames Member
Eric Schiller: <Swifty> Yes, but my new books will be for beginners. Frankly, I believe tactics practice is best done at www.chessmagnetschool.com. That's where all my students work out.

Since I'm doing so much teaching now, I'm mostly writing materials to support that. It is had to keep up with the kids, they learn so fast!

Jun-30-08   DrGrobb: Eric, will your Rubinstein Attack be in book form? Thanks for your hard work.
Jul-26-08   Alphastar: Hi Eric - I was wondering about something in R Burnett vs E Schiller, 1990

You'll see my question when you click the link.

Jul-27-08   vesivialvy93: Hi!
Only to know your opinions about training tactics on chess tactics server and chess tempo , is this good for tactics training? and wich one is best...i'm also training with the combinations encyclopedia for longer tacticals problems(no time limit too) thanks (i am 1800us)

mack: <Eric> Remember yesterday in Simpson's when one of your crew in the bar spotted a hippo in action? And how you described it as something like 'the sort of opening you show children in order to demonstrate how not to play'? I found that mightily amusing, not least because I was one of those playing black!
