I'm listening to a discussion on Today about so-called 'honour killings'. The policeman being interviewed has just said that one of their main difficulties is getting the victims to come forward to speak to them.
Er...that would be indeed be difficult. Given that they are dead.
I had a piece in yesterday's Times on the squalor of West End theatres. On Sunday night I saw that it's not just the West End. I went to see Sarah Silverman at the Hammersmith Apollo. What a total dump. It's filthy, and makes the West End seem like paradise.
Before we were allowed in, they kept us waiting for an hour beyond the advertised time. The foyer was a crush; and they told us that if we tried to go outside and come in again when the doors were at last opened, we would not be allowed back in. Bar profiteering again.
And, by the way, she was awful. I walked out after half an hour. It turns out she only did another twenty minutes anyway, and there was uproar from the audience. The tickets were over £40! It was the stand up version of Woody Allen's restaurant compaint: the food was awful; and such small portions.
It might be a cliche to say that I am honoured - and thrilled - to be entrusted with the world's oldest and most infuential Jewish newspaper, but that's because it's true. I am in the fortunate position of inheriting a success, and will be able to build on the terrific foundations laid by the current editor, David Rowan, and the superb JC team.
I'll have more to say about the future of this blog soon.
