Business Traveller

10th September, 2008

This month The Spectator’s Business Traveller is in association with the Government of Dubai, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

Dubai has grown hugely in importance over the last twenty-five years. It is now an important financial centre, travel hub, and tourist destination for the whole of the Gulf region.

Increasingly, it has become a global centre. Since 2000, Dubai’s GDP has been growing by 13 per cent annually – that’s faster than countries such as China and India. It has set itself a target of growing at 11 per cent annually for the next 10 years.

But what are the challenges of the future? Can Dubai keep up its rapid growth rate? Can it develop new industries whilst protecting existing ones? And as Dubai grows, what impact will it have on the rest of the region?

Matthew Lynn discusses these issues with a guest panel.

Capital Markets

18th September, 2008

Dubai’s transformation over the past few decades has been remarkable.  What was once barren desert is now a site for some of the biggest companies and investment projects in the world.  But with all that growth comes an increased need for capital – how else are all those skyscrapers going to get built?  With this in mind, the Dubai government has worked to make it easier for companies based in the emirate to raise capital.

Dubai as an entrepôt

9th September, 2008

That Dubai is one of the leading global centres for commerce is evidenced by the fact that it is now a crossroads for some 170 global shipping lanes and 120 airlines.  As more and more companies take advantage of its free trade zones and other business-friendly measures, this success can only be expanded upon.

Golf

9th September, 2008

The world’s golfers are already choosing Dubai. And with exciting new courses, developments and tournaments on the horizon, its position as a premier golfing destination can only be strengthened
