COVER: The 2008 Smart List, pg. 160 | Download Cover PDF (444 KB)

The United States needs fresh directions and crisp action plans on intractable issues like climate change, energy, security and defense. To help advise the next president, we've come up with 15 experts with big ideas about how to tackle some of these challenges. The Wired advice includes:

  • Embrace the Post-American Age. The US needs to wise up about what parts of the world matter—and what parts don't.
  • Rebuild Healthcare By Using the Genome. DNA sequencing will soon cost as little as a CT scan. We should encourage new technologies that will use each individual's genes to provide a unique personal health prescription.
  • Deploy Psychologists as Well as Soldiers. Sensors, armor and smart bombs aren't enough to win a war any more. The modern army needs to call on political science, anthropology and economics to understand and influence the enemy.
  • Deal with the Water Crisis Now. The unsustainable demand on fresh water supplies is one of the world's more complex problems, requiring solutions that address scientific, political and economic issues.

How a 1980's novelty act spawned a pop-culture revolution.

Barcodes help identify cans of soup in the supermarket. Why not use the same technology to classify bugs—or any other form of life? Leaping into a controversy that has bitter detractors and rabid supporters, Wired contributor Gary Wolf investigates a new device that could be used to help name every creature on earth.
