Chest Online SUBSCRIBER HELP & SERVICES:

Frequently Asked Questions
about Institutional Subscriptions

  1. My institution has a subscription to Chest, and access to Chest Online, but I'm not able to see the full text of articles. I'm prompted for a username and password. Why is this happening?

When this happens, the IP address for your machine is not being recognized by our computer. This failure is caused by one of three things:

Your institutional subscription has not yet been activated

The person who "activated" the online subscription did not enter in all needed IP addresses for your institution

The person who "activated" the online subscription does not realize that some subnets of your institution are routed through a proxy server

For any of these reasons, please notify your institution or library administrator or IT department that you would like access to CHEST Online and refer him or her to the institutional information pages on this web site. Or you can send us Feedback so that we can try to diagnose the problem.

  2. My library subscribes to Chest, and I am unable to view the full text of articles. I'm prompted for a user name and password. Why is this happening?

Perhaps your institution has not yet activated its institutional subscription to Chest Online. Notify your library that you would like access to Chest Online, and encourage your librarian to activate the online subscription. Another possibility is that the unique IP (Internet Protocol) address of your machine is not being recognized by the online access sytem. Your institution may not have included your IP address when the administrator activated the online subscription. You may notify you librarian or subscription administrator that you would like access to CHEST Online and refer him or her to the portion of our web site that explains institutional subscription activation.

  3. Who from my institution can access Chest Online?

Authorized users (faculty, registered students, staff, and on-site visitors) may access CHEST Online from registered IP addresses located at your institution.

  4. What is an Institution?

An Institution is all parts of an organization that report to the same Chief Academic Officer or Chief Executive Officer. Please note that membership organizations are not considered Institutions and should contact CHEST directly if they are interested in obtaining a site license.

  5. How does Institutional Access work?

When someone attempts to use Chest Online, our server checks to see if the requesting computer is within the list of internet IP address provided by a subscribing institution. If it is, the reader will be able to use all those services enabled for institutional readers. For institutional subscribers, there are no usernames or passwords to remember, and there is currently no limit on the number of readers from your institution who may access Chest Online simultaneously.

If readers want to access Chest Online from computers that are not part of your institutional network (e.g., through dial-in or telnet through a commercial Internet service provider) they can do so only through a member subscription.

  6. What do CHEST Online institutional subscribers have access to?

    Institutional Subscribers have access to:
Tables of contents, abstracts, full text searching, full text display, PDFs, links to Medline and GenBank, future tables of contents, supplemental data, and the PDF archive of material back to 1946 (available as of January 2007). Access is limited to computers within a particular set of internet IP addresses but a password system can also be set up for remote or dynamic IP users. (Note that individuals who are not ACCP members must subscribe at the Institutional level.)

  7. How can I tell if my institution has subscribed to CHEST Online

If your institution has a subscription, you'll automatically have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, full-text searching, full text display, PDFs, Medline and GenBank links, all content archives, and future tables of contents. You'll also see a button at the top of the page confirming you're signed in as part of an institution.

If your institution has not subscribed, or if you wish to take advantage of the additional services available to member subscribers, you can choose to join the American College of Chest Physicians as a member and access Chest Online as part of our membership benefits.

  8. Can my institution subscribe only to the electronic version?

Yes, institutions can subscribe only to the electronic version or to a combined print and electronic subscription.
[Ordering Procedure] [Cost] [ ACCP Membership]

  9. Will we still be able to get the paper version? And for how long?

Yes, institutions and individuals will be able to receive the paper version for the foreseeable future. Additional paper subscriptions are available to institutional subscribers who already have a combined print and online subscription and wish to have additional paper subscriptions sent to multiple institutional sites.

  10. If our Chest Online subscription expires and at some later date we reinstate our subscription, will we have access to all years of the electronic version?

Yes, when you buy a subscription to Chest Online, you will have access to all years of the database.

  11. How can I access the Chest Online if I am not an ACCP member and I don't have access through an institutional subscription?

You may purchase Chest as an Individual (Non-Member) subscriber or you may wish to apply for ACCP membership. Without a subscription you have access to the Table of Contents, abstracts, and full text searching (but not full text viewing) at no cost and without having to register. You can also purchase access to individual articles or full single issues using our pay-per-view options or purchase limited access to the full site (for 30 days).
