Nov-15-08		Mateo: A typical win for Yue. The ending is highly instructive. I think 36...Re6? is the losing move. After 37.Rxe6 fxe6 38.Nf6!, White is winning. A) 38...Nxf6 39.gxf6 Ke8 (to avoid d7) 40.Ke3, zugswang. B) 38...Nb6 (or 38...Nb6), Black is lost on the long run because his King cannot cross the 'e' file. For this reason, 36...Rxe2 was necessary. After 37.Kxe2 Ke8, the King comes into play.

Nov-15-08		Eyal: <Mateo: 38...Nb6 (or 38...Nb6 [Nb8?]), Black is lost on the long run because his King cannot cross the 'e' file.> Still, 38...Nb8 should have made the win at least much less straightforward for White. The black knight can be placed at c6, and there's the idea of c4-(bxc4)-a4-a3 to get counterplay (whereas with the knight on b6, a4 doesn't help after bxc4 because of c5).

Nov-16-08		Eyal: <Hits from the Bong> Heh - according to the official data (http://chess-results.info/tnr16314....) his name is actually Buenaventura; "Bong" is probably a nickname, but it certainly makes for better pun-material.

Aug-22-09		rjsolcruz: I wonder if 32... f6 would make a difference on the outcome of the game. But considering the difference in rating, almost 300 points, GM Bong is under-rated. Maybe the rating system should factor the quality of the game itself rather than its simplistic win, lose or draw basis. I mean that GM Bong should even though he lost this game should be awarded a few rating points because of the toe-to-toe or closeness of the game.
