Combo treatment for prostate cancer cuts deaths

Treating advanced prostate cancer with radiation and hormone-blocking drugs cut the death rate in half in a study of Scandinavian men, researchers report. In the United States, the combination has been standard care since the 1990s. But in Europe, many doctors have avoided the combo treatment and used hormone drugs alone, thinking the pair would be too harsh for most patients.

'What this study shows is that men with prostate cancer do benefit from more aggressive therapy,' said Dr. Howard Sandler, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and a spokesman for the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Mugabe's party says opposition plots violence

Zimbabwe's ruling party has renewed accusations that its opponents are training to try to overthrow President Robert Mugabe, heightening political tension as the country faces a spreading cholera epidemic.

Opposition spokesman Nelson Chamisa dismissed the allegations made in state media Monday as 'ridiculous,' and said they could be used as a pretext to crack down harder on dissent.

'When a leopard starts devouring its young ones, it starts by accusing that young one of smelling like a goat,' Chamisa told The Associated Press.

New study firmly ties hormone use to breast cancer

Taking menopause hormones for five years doubles the risk for breast cancer, according to a new analysis of a big federal study that reveals the most dramatic evidence yet of the dangers of these still-popular pills.

Even women who took estrogen and progestin pills for as little as a couple of years had a greater chance of getting cancer. And when they stopped taking them, their odds quickly improved, returning to a normal risk level roughly two years after quitting.

Collectively, these new findings are likely to end any doubt that the risks outweigh the benefits for most women.
