Vano runner-up
FORMER St Kent’s College student Kairangi Vano narrowly missed out on the recent NZMT5 Wellington Open women’s singles title, going down to Dianne Hollands in the final, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Vano has fought quite a few tennis finals of late with Hollands, but lost to her fellow Aucklander in their most recent encounter.
Vano made a crucial break and took out the first set, but Hollands went on the attack in the second set, securing it to take the final to a deciding set. Hollands raced out to an early lead of 4-2. The seventh and eighth games proved to be long, going to deuce and advantage many times before they were shared.
Hollands had at least four match points on the Vano serve in the eighth game, but Vano held her nerve to force Hollands to serve out the match. The win was Hollands’ sixth title of the domestic season.
Main draw missed
PAKURANGA’S GD Jones dropped out of the Heineken Open when he lost his second round singles qualifying match to Spain’s O Hernandez. The Kiwi Davis Cup representative won his first qualifying match 6-2, 6-1 against another Spaniard, but couldn’t progress into the main draw.
Jones is now intending to head back overseas to compete in a series of tennis tournaments in America.
