In a speech to Congress last night, President Obama tried to instill confidence in the American public and also explain why Washington has had to bail out banks and investment companies.

altFeb. 25, 2009 -- Last night, in his first appearance before a joint session of Congress, President Obama delivered an optimistic speech, repeatedly telling the nation that though the economic climate may be dark, clearer days lie ahead.

"While our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken, though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: we will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before," Obama said.

The new White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, established on Thursday, will have a broader and more secular vision than it did under George W. Bush.

Barack ObamaFeb. 6, 2009 --- President Barack Obama signed an executive order Thursday establishing the new White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Though Obama appointed former Pentecostal minister Joshua DuBois to lead it, the revamped office will, according to the White House, have a broader more secular vision than the faith-based ideas of George W. Bush --- working on behalf of "all Americans committed to improving their communities, no matter their religious or political beliefs."

Conservative groups say a provision in Obama's economic stimulus plan could shut down Christian clubs that meet on secular university campuses.

College BuildingFeb. 6, 2009 - Conservatives say a provision in President Obama's economic stimulus plan could block Christian college students from using campus facilities.

According to the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), "a discriminatory provision" exists in Obama's plan that prohibits federal funds from going to religiously affiliated schools post-secondary schools, such as divinity schools.

The Bible was absent from President Obama’s second swearing-in on Wednesday, but a U.K.-based ministerial alliance has sent him one for future use.

Bible, American FlagJan. 22, 2009 -- President Barack Obama retook the oath of office on Wednesday evening after the first one was flubbed. But because the Bible was noticeably absent from the second swearing-in, a U.K.-based ministerial alliance is sending him one.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the second oath at the White House on Wednesday to dispel confusion created by the first one, which was given out of sequence, and to erase questions about whether Obama was legally president. On Tuesday, Roberts was apparently working without a copy of the oath, CNN reported. (View Tuesday’s swearing-in.)

Both oaths included the phrase “so help me God.” But on Wednesday, Obama raised his right hand but used no Bible, according to CNN. (Hear the second swearing-in.)

Editor's Note: In light of the presidential inauguration tomorrow, we are sending out Prophetic Insight a day early this week. It is a prayer composed by Kimberly Daniels, overseer of Spoken Word Ministries in Jacksonville, Florida, that we encourage all believers to use to intercede for our incoming president, Barack Obama. Daniels is the author of several books, including her most recent, Delivered to Destiny (Charisma House). You can learn more about her and her ministry at kimberlydaniels.com.

We must pray that our new president will honor the God of our fathers and seek counsel from His prophets.

The hearts of millions of Americans were stirred on Tuesday as we watched Barack Obama place his hand on Abraham Lincoln’s Bible and swear to uphold his duties as president. The cynicism and divisiveness of politics gave way to civility for a few moments as Obama stood on that massive stage in front of the Capitol and spoke of a “new era of responsibility” that he hopes to initiate.

By overturning the Mexico City Policy, or the so-called ‘global gag rule,’ President Obama will free up taxpayer money to finance abortions abroad.

Obama to Help Finance Overseas Abortions

Jan. 23, 2009 — The day after the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, President Barack Obama signed an executive order repealing the so-called Mexico City Policy, a regulation from the Reagan-era that prohibited U.S. funds from going to organizations that promote or perform abortions abroad.

Known by critics as the “global gag rule,” the Mexico City Policy bans U.S.-funded organizations from promoting abortion overseas. Depending on his view on abortion, nearly every president has either upheld or repealed the policy since Ronald Reagan established it in 1984.

Though Obama has been publicly evasive on the life issue, most observers expected him to take a strong pro-abortion position after assuming office.

According to the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), revoking the Mexico City Policy will end up diverting millions of taxpayer dollars into the hands of organizations that aggressively promote abortion in developing, overpopulated countries.

“President Obama not long ago told the American people that he would support policies to reduce abortions, but today he is effectively guaranteeing more abortions by funding groups that promote abortion as a method of population control,” said Douglas Johnson, legislative director at the NRLC. “Obama’s order will predictably result in a redirection of funds to groups such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation, which are ideologically committed to the doctrine that abortion on demand must be universally available as a birth control method.”

Obama’s support for abortion access has forced him to walk a political tightrope with religious conservatives he courted on the campaign stump last year.

Yesterday, CBN News’ senior correspondent David Brody reported Obama would not overturn the Mexico City Policy on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade because the new president wanted to “stress the need for reducing abortions in this country rather than focus on the divisive tit for tat policy reversals of the past.”

“The point here is that President Obama has opted out of the ‘in your face’ politics of the past,” Brody wrote. “He may reverse Mexico City Policy at some point … but today is a day where Obama took the more tactful and less confrontational approach.”

Still, the pro-life community has been bracing itself for a ramped up battle over abortion since Obama was elected in November. One reason is because Obama has promised abortion advocates in the past that as president he would sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act. Opponents say the highly controversial bill codifies Roe v. Wade, lifts most restrictions on abortion and forces religious hospitals to offer abortions.

Anti-abortion activists also expect Obama to revoke the “right of conscience” regulation passed by former President Bush last month, which allows medical staff to refuse to participate in abortion practices that they object to on moral grounds.

One of Bush’s final acts as president last week was to declare Sunday, Jan. 18, the National Sanctity of Human Life Day.

Meanwhile, a group called 40 Days for Life launched a 40-day prayer and fasting campaign this week to end abortion. Participants in more than 100 U.S. cities are gathering each day for peaceful vigils outside abortion centers and Planned Parenthood offices. —Paul Steven Ghiringhelli
