The Latest on Ted Haggard

The week that a new documentary about Ted Haggard is premiering on HBO, more accusations have surfaced of an alleged inappropriate relationship involving the former pastor.

Jan. 27, 2009 - The pastor of Ted Haggard's former church says he's heartbroken over a former male volunteer's alleged experiences with Haggard.

Brady Boyd, senior pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., said a young man announced his alleged inappropriate relationship with Haggard shortly after Haggard's sex and drug scandal in 2006.

Boyd said the 25-year-old man received "countless hours of prayer and ministry" before deciding to hire an attorney in 2007. The lawyer negotiated with New Life's insurance company for a settlement, which Boyd said was paid through the insurance, not through tithes.

The young man told Boyd a few weeks ago he was thinking of making his story public, because he was disgusted with reports about the new HBO documentary titled The Trials of Ted Haggard, which airs Jan. 29.

Boyd said it apparently upset the young man to hear that Haggard was being depicted as a victim in the documentary.

"[The young man] said, Listen, I have a lot of pain in my own life," Boyd recalled. "[But] I told him it is not going to help your healing, or the church's healing, [to go public with your story]." Boyd said he also later told Haggard that other accusers could come forward if he participated in the HBO documentary.

Haggard, who was accused of soliciting a male prostitute and purchasing methamphetamines in November 2006, now sells life insurance in Colorado to make a living.

He has been involved in a media blitz promoting his new HBO film since earlier this month and is scheduled to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show tomorrow and Larry King Live on Thursday.

On Monday, Boyd defended his church against questions raised in the media that New Life paid for the young man' silence. He pointed out the most common provision in any out-of-court settlement is that "you don't speak about the terms." "That is Lawyer 101," Boyd said. "It wasn't hush money."

New Life reported trying to help, apparently providing the young man with pastoral care, professional counseling and financial assistance. "We did this with the hope that he would experience healing and move forward with purpose in his life," Boyd said. "He's a young man who still needs a lot of help. I feel sad for him. I feel sad that he came to a church looking for help, but actually suffered more pain and hurt. Anytime that happens that's a black eye to the church."

The young man said he was to be paid $179,000 by New Life through 2009 for college education and counseling, the AP reported.

Even if New Life has the legal right to take action against the young man for going public and allegedly breaking the terms of their settlement, Boyd said the church has no desire to do so. "We're not in this for a fight. We're trying to bring healing to everybody," he said. "So we're not going to do that."

In an e-mail sent to supporters last Friday, Boyd said New Life has received reports of numerous "incidents of inappropriate behavior" since Haggard's moral failings were made public in 2006. "In each case, we have tried our very best to do the right thing," he wrote. "Our concern has been and continues to be for every person affected. We renew our invitation today for anyone who believes he or she has been hurt to please come forward."

On Monday, the young man told News Channel 13 in Colorado Springs that he began attending New Life after allegedly being kicked out of Moody Bible Institute for admitting that he struggled with homosexuality. He eventually became a volunteer pastor's assistant at the church and said Haggard invited him on a trip to Cripple Creek, Colo., in the summer of 2006. While in the hotel room, he said he felt paralyzed as Haggard began acting sexually inappropriate.

The young man also alleged that Haggard sent him thousands of "weird" text messages, sometimes in the middle of the night, describing various sexual experiences he was having. "It was like he had two personalities," he said. "It was like here is this 50-year-old pastor who is the ultimate man of God and then this 16-year old horny boy who couldn't keep himself together."

Boyd said the young man joined New Life Church for "pastoral help and friendship." "Our church is known for reaching Millennials and the next generation and he saw that and really wanted to be a part of something like that and get some help for his life and discover God.

"Instead, he was harmed," Boyd said. "I hate that. I regret that. It breaks my heart."

Haggard told News Channel 13 that there was no physical contact with the young man, but that he "regretted" his "irresponsible behavior."

Boyd said he does not know whether the young man's relationship with Haggard was physical or to what degree it was consensual. "What we do know is that it was an inappropriate relationship between a pastor and a volunteer to the church," he said. "We had enough evidence from text messaging and other things that we really had no choice but to [settle]."

In last night's broadcast on News Channel 13, the young man accused New Life of really not caring about his wellbeing, and also of not treating Haggard with sufficient caution. "I really felt the church staff did what they could to get me to move to a different city, to get me to stop going to the church, to make these promises to do whatever they could to help, but their main focus was to cover it up," he said. "They think Ted Haggard is not a harm to this community, and I really think they're wrong. They're dead wrong."

Before word of The Trials of Ted Haggard began garnering publicity recently, Haggard remained mostly out of the public eye since being dismissed from his former church in 2006. One notable exception was in November, when he appeared in the pulpit of a longtime friend from Illinois. At the time, leaders involved in Haggard's original restoration process said they disagreed with his decision to preach at the church.

Leaders of New Life Church, which Haggard founded in 1984, deemed Haggard's spiritual restoration "incomplete" earlier last year. Boyd has since said Haggard and his family are completely released from "any legal constraint from the church" and free to move on with their lives.

In the HBO film, Haggard identifies himself as an evangelical Christian, who "from time to time struggles with same-sex attraction." He denies a comment, widely circulated in the media after the 2006 scandal, that he claimed to be "completely heterosexual."

In a recent interview with Dan Gilgoff, religion reporter for U.S. News & World Report, Haggard said he is not only sorry for hurting his former church members and friends, but that he also apologizes to the gay community for the hurt he caused them.

"I think I'm much more compassionate and understanding and contrite than I was then because in the process of the scandal the volume of hate mail I've received [was] incredible, from the right and the left," he said. "And so now I understand more what a homosexual feels like being subject to religious ridicule, and it makes me very compassionate, and I don't think I had that degree of compassion before."

On Sunday, Boyd told his New Life congregation that he and other church leaders have shouldered the knowledge of the young man' allegations to protect congregants. "For the last two years, we've carried the burden, the weight of this information to protect you," he said. "We've been diligent, faithful, pastoral ... we've carried the weight of it, hoping that the church could move forward ... so that healing, real spiritual healing could happen.

"From my pastor's heart to you: I am sorry that this wound has been reopened for many of you. I am very sorry," he said. "I want to tell you, I'm praying for you. I'm praying that we can be healed.

"When we look back over these past two years, one of the things we are absolutely confident of is the faithfulness of God."  --Paul Steven Ghiringhelli

One More Thing
"attraction to other men" is not an illness.....it is "sin". We need to stop with all this political correctness and just speak truth in love. God forgive us all when we inable this behavior by those who are called to a higher standard, or for that matter anyone of us who call ourseves Chrstians.

So Sad
As I watched all the interviews with Ted & his wife, one thing kept coming to mind. If a man of God like Pastor Ted cannot get victory over this "attraction toward other men" what "hope" does the average man or woman have? The enemy of our soul just loves to glorify that there is no "hope" and sadly I believe that this is the message that went forth from these interviews with Ted. He would have done well to have just been still and let God. There was nothing said that glorified our Lord and Savior. So Sad!

I Watched Ted on Oprah Today
I watched Ted and Gayle on Oprah today. I say we just let them get on with their lives. This Grant Haas is trying to stir things up and get notariety. He's been apologized to, given counseling, a college education, and money out of this deal, and he needs to let go and get on with his own life now and forget the past. Grant, it's time to move on and get a life, and make something of yourself. Let go of the past. I know you've been wounded. Lots of us have too! I was sexually abused and lived through years of pain, but I had to forgive myself and try to forgive the abuser. God will have the last say! The Haggards have been through hell because of sin. Like we all have. I was one of Ted's harshest critics, but when I saw two of his children sit there and still love their dad and talk of their experiences, my heart goes out to them. And Gayle. I thought why doesn't she kick Ted's butt out the door? But the Bible says what greater love has a man, than he would lay down his life for another? If love conquers all, then she has the love. She's not in denial. She knows what a complex person Ted is. But if he continues on with his therapy and counseling, and learning how to "manage" his illness...well don't we all? Remember when the church told people if they had depression that it was a devil, and it was evil to take medicine? Now they know it is a medical issue and can be helped with meds, counseling, various ways. I wonder how many of you sat and looked at online porn tonight from your home computer in your little den or office? You have secret sins. You are no better. After we become Christians, we are all to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling as the scripture states. We do that by refusing the temptations and saying no to sin time after time after time. We live in a fallen world. We will have to fight sin for the rest of our lives. There are many complexities surrounding Ted and his experiences in his spirit, soul, and body. He needs money. If he can earn it being on TV right now, then let him. With his temperament, he needs to be seen and heard, in some kind of avenue. Today was the first time I have heard him come clean and be honest, and yes he DID apologize to everyone!! He did!!! I was glad to hear his honesty and humility. If he can stay on the road to humility and stay in some counseling, then I have big hopes for him, and I wish the whole family nothing but good will and good thoughts, and I say to you Ted and Gayle, hang in there. You know what? Your latter days in serving the Lord can be much better than the former! Stay clean, stay safe, stay humble, and know that we are on your side and want what is best for you. You said it so clearly to Oprah today...this is what Christ died for...our screwed up lives...our sins. We will never know how much it cost to see our sin upon that cross. The least we can do is live for Christ.

It does not really matter what the secular press think of how the Church has responded to the Ted Haggard issue, we are not in their courts. I have followed this story since 2006 because Ted's books & messages has been of tremendous blessing to me and my ministry. I believe the New Life Church has done what is correct and Biblical in dealing with a fallen brother & i think if Ted is really serious about his destiny, he should submit to discipline and stay out of public glare, God can and will surely restore if Ted plays by God's rules of repentance and discipline. I believe that the Chuch still love Ted much

Ted can't resist the spotlight
I find it sad that Ted can't resist getting in the spotlight--again--even if it's not for the cause of Christ.

If something happened to me that happened to him, I would want to go off ALONE with my family and the Lord and focus on getting a "real, honest" relationship with the Lord. I wouldn't be so intent on "restorative" therapy or meeting with other
pastors--that just focuses more attention on "me."

But Ted choose to meet with the pastors for help---and then slipped out of that relationship--made some silly claims that now he was "straight" and allowed another documentary to be made about him. Thursday night he's on Larry King live.

I understand the sexual struggles he is dealing with but I guess I wish he would just "go away" for a few years. But the spotlight calls and he responds.

Transparency - very good word for us, Majormiller. Accountability is another one. We pastors have to do a better job of being transparent and accountable. Paul was this way and it was a fundamental established by Jesus and proliferated in the early Church. We have to be mindful and meticulous in order to keep the Body healthy...and that is not limited to leaders. Holiness is the standard that Jesus set and it is the measure of the fulness of the stature of the Body of Christ.

Stop the lies.
We don't hate Ted, but despise the lies and the life he was living behind the scenes, just like Todd Bentley. I do not recall reading anything, anywhere that says Ted made a statement of repentance to everyone. He has said he was sorry for the "inappropriate behavior" and KRDO.com has documented this story since last week, but that is not what I want to hear. What happened to "sin" and admittance that he is a sex addict and a SEX ABUSER!?! Go listen to the interview on KRDO's website of the young man. How reprehensible that C. Peter Wagner's apostle who wrote books and spoke of global transformation and the kingdom dominion theology and prayer powers, was screwing around with young men and a male prostitute for YEARS! HELLO! What is wrong with you people up there in Colorado Springs? Is it too cold? And what about the former worship leader of the World Prayer Center next door, Terry MacAlmon? He left his wife for someone...male or female...who knows...and Charisma reported he refused counseling and reconciliation to his wife. What's up with that? He resigned his ministry for what?? To have to use Viagra to keep up with the new hottie?? Like Bentley says she gives him "comfort!" This is why I'm upset, disappointed, disillusioned and disgusted with you men and the church! Where are the father figures? How could Haggard, who was to be a father, mentor, pastor, shepherd, guide, leader, and Christian do what he has done to and with young men and cavorted with a prostitute, all the while standing behind the sacred desk and lying to us?? That is the most reprehensible sin of all. I wonder about his own children, if he sexually abused them and commited incest. This makes me sick to my stomach! So he says "forgive." Yes. Well the damage has been done, and those ones you abused will spend YEARS in therapy and the pain NEVER ever really goes away. You screwed up their lives, now THEY have to fix themselves and get it right. How messed up is this whole thing. How pointless and hopeless it is. You people who have never suffered at the hands of an abuser have no idea the pain. Yea, say forgive. That's all that you can do. RARELY will the offender take responsibility and say they did it. And it's most usually an older person who is abusing the younger who is afraid to open their mouths. Church wake up.

This is your chance to shine the Light New Life Congregation
What a wonderful opportunity for others who are just like Haggard who sit in your pews Sunday after Sunday to come forward and get help. The problem is do you know how to love them as Jesus. Does the church even have a clue why people are making the choices they are making. Let's not just sweep this under the rug or better yet ignore the elephant sitting in the middle of the living room (church) and say it doesn't exist. Let's not single out the homosexuals/lesbians alone. What about the husband who is into porn, the wife who finds shopping more of a lover that fulfills her need then any other relationship in her life, and of course the more churchsocially acceptable alcoholic, drug addiction, etc., etc. The world is watching how we love those who walk in the flesh and not the Spirit. Why don't you have an altar call for those in slavary to sin for restoration and not condemnation. Show the world we are not perfect that's why we have a Savior. My favorite bumber sticker when I first got saved, "Christians aren't perfect just forgiven". Let's stop saying sin exist in the Church but not offer any hope. Paul say's we are dead to sin and alive to God. We need to show people why they think they will be worthy if________(and then they fill in the blank with everything and everyone then Christ). Just "stop sinning" doesn't work. It reminds me of a very dysfunctional campaign, "Just say no to Drugs". Paul already pointed out that the law could not bring about holiness because the flesh is weak. We need to get back to the basics, Romans Chapters 6,7, and 8. I am never suprise when someone in the leadership falls to the flesh. What? Do they stop being human just because they become a pastor or significant public figure. All the more for them to be trasparent.
