Education in Kolkata

Kolkata has several parallel systems of education:

Non-privileged children mainly attend government primary schools, if they attend school at all. The quality of education available in these schools is not, by world standards, good. There have been recent initiatives, such as Shikhshalaya Prakalpa, to bring more children into the school system and improve the quality of teaching.

Kolkata has twelve public universities, numerous degree colleges, five medical colleges, one dental college, several engineering, management and polytechnic institutes.

A number of Indian and foreign institutions have branches in Kolkata. The following universities have their main campuses in Kolkata or in its suburbs:

All private engineering colleges are affiliated with the West Bengal University of Technology. The University of Calcutta also offers some engineering courses. Jadavpur University and Bengal Engineering & Science University are other institutions that offer degree courses in engineering. The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and the Birla Institute of Technology also offer technology and related courses in their city based campuses.

All medical colleges are affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. Previously they were affiliated with the University of Calcutta.
