Divine Encounter

Stay Filled

E-mail Print PDF

After I received the baptism in the Holy Spirit in 1974, everything changed. Though I had served God, I had not led anyone to a personal relationship with Jesus. But as a product of the Jesus movement, I was used by God to win hundreds of souls and saw many awesome healings. The next 10 years were great.

The decade of my life after that was a wilderness. I thought God had lifted His hand off my life. Looking back, I can see that wasn’t true. But I simply didn’t know how to transition from a corporate move of God to personally staying filled with the Holy Spirit.

While working on my doctoral degree at Fuller Seminary, I took John Wimber’s now infamous class, "Signs, Wonders and Church Growth." Instead of receiving his insights on the depths of being filled with the Spirit, I had a cavalier attitude of "been there, done that."

In fact, I was consumed with a desire to quit ministry after the hardest year of my life in 1993. I was so depressed, I had to exercise my faith to move from depression to discouragement.

Dare to Declare

God has given us the right to speak His will and see transformation come to pass.

Can you imagine giving an account for every word you have ever spoken? According to the Bible, you will. Matthew 12:36 declares that day is coming: "'But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment'" (NKJV).

I believe that verse is meant not to cause undue introspection or condemnation but to help us understand the impact of what we say and the privilege God has given us to use our words for His glory.

Know Your Rights

Everything changes when we understand that we are sons and daughters of God.

Wow, what are these? a baby must wonder the first time he touches his toes. Eventually, he realizes that those toes belong to him. He's in wide-eyed awe, learning more about himself each day. As he continues to grow into adulthood, the wonder of those first moments of self-discovery fades, but he never ceases to learn more and more about the unique person God made him to be.

Similarly, the body of Christ is constantly growing and learning about its own identity. Through much sacrifice and discomfort, it has gained unprecedented influence in the world today.

Heaven’s Conduit

You were designed to be a free-flowing channel of Jesus Christ Himself.

Are you ever amazed at how quickly news travels? As soon as candidate Mike Huckabee won the Iowa caucus in January, headlines hit the banners on computer screens and flooded the overhead televisions at the airport. If it's juicy gossip, you'll find cell phones flipping open, a clutch of people whispering nearby or thumbs burning among the text message set.

News may travel fast, but the "good news" travels remarkably. More than just through broadcast media or the printed page, the good news is carried through you. God has made you to be a conduit of all He is.
