Taking Jesus to the Fringes

Taking Jesus to the FringesChrisma went to the streets to report on Christians who are using innovative ways to make Jesus real to atheists. New Agers, sex workers and teen runaways.

Jesus is the best model for evangelism.

He was with the people. He held children in His arms, dined with tax collectors in their homes, healed abused prostitutes and took His message of salvation to the poorest villages in Israel.

A Voice for the Voiceless

Alveda King The niece of Martin Luther King Jr. was an unlikely woman to become a pro-life activist. She had an abortion herself, but the painful experience helped her uncover the lies used by the abortion industry.

Alveda King is an unlikely poster child for pro-life causes. In 1970, when abortion was still illegal in the United States, her doctor gave her an abortion under false pretenses. Then in 1973, the 22-year-old walked into a Planned Parenthood clinic and underwent a second abortion, performed by a doctor who assured her, “It’s just a blob of tissue.”

Can I Get a Witness?

Can I Get a Witness? Most people learn about the love of Jesus from a friend. Here’s how you can become an effective evangelist.

One of the greatest questions facing every member of the body of Christ today is this: “Can we really reach the world we live in with the message of Jesus Christ?” If your answer is yes, then the follow-up question is equally important: “How can we do it?” The best place to research these questions is the archives of the early church, which we call the book of Acts. Look at the following passage of Scripture:

He Hears Heaven’s Music

He Hears Heaven’s MusicChris Tomlin writes worship songs that resonate with a global audience.

Chris Tomlin has a secret that may surprise many people: He doesn’t listen to music in his spare time, even though he is a Grammy-nominated, Dove Award-winning writer of global chart-topping songs such as “How Great Is Our God,” “Holy Is the Lord” and “Indescribable.”

“I’m a pretty normal guy. I listen to talk radio and ESPN,” Tomlin says.

Ted and Gayle Haggard

Charisma: You probably feel as though you've been to hell and back since your very public moral failure in late 2006. How are you doing spiritually these days?

Ted Haggard: My visit to hell on Earth as a consequence of my own actions was both devastating and eye-opening. It took a tree to fall on me, but I did get the point. As a result, my spiritual life is undoubtedly stronger now. I am becoming the man I always prayed to be in my heart and my actions.

Becoming worse than a leper in the eyes of others has deeply humbled me, to say the least. But I am thankful because it has enabled me to experience Jesus relentlessly pursuing me. Knowing He came for the unrighteousness, and that He came after me and rescued me when I was helpless, is incredibly reassuring. In my new life, the Scriptures and the ministry of the Holy Spirit are more powerful, and my relationships with other believers are healthier because they are based on the righteousness of Christ in us rather than our own goodness.

What I Learned From the Fathers

What I Learned From the FathersOur spiritual fathers have much to offer us from their years of walking with God. Here’s what I learned recently from Jack Hayford, John Perkins, Lloyd Ogilvie, Loren Cunningham, Henry Blackaby and Winkie Pratney.

In the days of the early church, the apostle Paul stressed the importance to believers of having a leader, or “father,” they could learn from. He wrote to the Corinthians: “For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Therefore I urge you, imitate me.” (1 Cor. 4:15-16, NKJV).
