Push for Islamic Courts in Kenya Alarms Christians

A constitutional battle to expand the scope of Islamic courts in Kenya threatens to ignite religious tensions at a time when authorities are on high alert against Muslim extremists with ties to Somalia.



Constitutional provisions for Islamic, or Kadhis’, courts have existed in Kenya since 1963, with the courts serving the country’s coastal Muslim population in matters of personal status, marriage, divorce, or inheritance. Kenya’s secular High Court has jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters, and even a decision in the Islamic courts can be appealed at the High Court.
 

Christians Gear Up for Olympics Outreach in Vancouver

Christians from around the world are gearing up for a large-scale evangelistic outreach during the Winter Olympics, which begin Friday in Vancouver, British Columbia.

As many as 3,000 missions workers from across North America and Europe are to be on hand to reach both athletes and the scores of international visitors expected to frequent the two major Olympic sites in Vancouver and nearby Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort Feb. 12-28.

 

Denominations Mourn Loss of Pentecostal Bishops

The Church of God in Christ and the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World are mourning the loss of two prominent bishops.

On Sunday, Bishop Allie T. Moore (pictured at left), the last surviving bishop to be appointed by Church of God in Christ (COGIC) founder C.H. Mason, died in his Louisville, Ky., home at the age of 98.

 

24-7 Prayer Marks Tenth Anniversary With London Event

A Britain-based ministry that has sparked a global movement of nonstop prayer is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week.

On Saturday, 24-7 Prayer is hosting an Iam10 celebration in London, where attendees will reflect on the last decade, spend time in prayer and worship, and participate in training opportunities.

Christian Musician Meets Needs in Haiti

Mark Stuart of the Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline was in Haiti when the magnitude 7 earthquake devastated the Caribbean island nation Jan. 12.

"The whole earth shook, and it felt like the end of the world," Stuart told a packed house at Ventura Missionary Church last week. "Haiti was the world's worst place to live before this happened. Now I cannot even describe the hurt, the needs, the devastation."

 

Tebow Ad a Win for Focus on the Family

Focus on the Family president Jim Daly said the ministry's Web site was "crashing" the day after its hotly debated pro-life ad featuring Tim Tebow aired during the Super Bowl.

The site experienced 40 times its normal volume of traffic, drawing 50,000 unique visitors and 500,000 hits, according to USA Today. Daly said the site would have crashed had Focus not beefed up its servers last week.
