Carville Cemetery--Town of Brasher--BR010

The Carville Cemetery is located on the Maple Ridge Road just outside of Helena. In Helena, turn onto the Nevin Road from State Highway 37C. 2/10ths of a mile further, you must bear right due to the closed bridge. 1.1 miles further, bear left onto Maple Ridge Road at the "Y" intersection. Carville Cemetery is 1/2 mile from this last intersection, on the left hand side of the road.

This cemetery is on the Racquette River topographical map, and also listed in the Geographical Name Information System (GNIS). The coordinates as listed and measured are 44 55 05N and 074 45 14W.

The earliest burial I found from the digital photographs (taken April 2000) was a Nevin boy, son of David and Nancy Nevin, born March 23, 1819 and died April 11, 1819. On a somewhat related note, the following excerpt was taken from the Thursday edition, April 20, 2000, of the Watertown Daily Times, the Looking Back--News from the Past column:

April 20, 1925: One hundred years ago tomorrow, the town of Brasher was founded, the

first town meeting directed to be held at the house of Benjamin Nevin. However, the first

settlement in that town was in 1817 near the village of Helena by several families who

came on and settled under the agency of Russell Attwater of Norfolk, who in that year

erected a sawmill, which afterwards contained a gristmill with a single run of stones.
