- JoshyLeeArm, on 05/21/2010, -16/+131He spelled 'PC' wrong.
- GamerX, on 05/21/2010, -22/+109Mac? Open? does.....not......compute *head explodes*

Less open than FreeBSD or Linux, but more open than just about anything else. - rpatrick819, on 05/21/2010, -3/+66Yeah, considering Valve currently publishes to Windows & Mac (but not linux) and also uses Steam...these comments make perfect sense!
I love Valve/Steam, but that was just a retarded thing to say. Excellent trolling, Gabe. - hardeep1singh, on 05/21/2010, -1/+51Hey Valve, if you really want an open platform why don't you port steam to Linux?
- jacksons98, on 05/21/2010, -9/+57In the console world PS3 is the most open.
- alecb, on 05/21/2010, -15/+62I like your icon. It makes me think that lady body builder has a man-***** that she would penetrate me with after I dared to speak up for myself in public.
- arekkusu, on 05/21/2010, -9/+50Seriously, the PS3 doesn't need an overpriced Sony branded hard drive if you want more capacity, just a regular SATA 2.5" HDD. It also doesn't need an overpriced wireless adapter for wireless internet. (OK that's built in the console, but still does MS need to sell theirs $99 ?)
Now, don't get me wrong, the X360 is a great console but ***** those overpriced accessories. - ElCheLikesAudi, on 05/21/2010, -5/+44I don't understand the hate for the PS3 with this guy?
- hardeep1singh, on 05/21/2010, -2/+40Does it run Crysis?
Wow, the question actually fits here. - Samurai77, on 05/21/2010, -8/+39Open like a clam shell more like it.
- b3owulf, on 05/21/2010, -5/+34PS3 would like Valve to get over it.
- noexistence, on 05/21/2010, -5/+33Am I the only one that actually read the article!?
Gabe says he wants the PS3 to be more open like the Mac in that more open with the direction Sony is taking their product...aka their technological road map for the console. It has NOTHING to do with being an open platform. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! - CrazedLeper, on 05/21/2010, -23/+51Sony did the heavy lifting and made an awesome system. They deserve success. Valve, on the other hand, is salivating at the prospect of being able to infect the PS3 with it's control scheme to it's own benefit but I don't see Valve investing in any hardware. Valve can make their own console or STFU.
- InvincibleQ, on 05/21/2010, -2/+23Hahaha... Oh wait you are serious!? Let me laugh harder! HAHAHA!
- Bender Bending Rodriguez - HappyScrappy, on 05/21/2010, -8/+28Give me a break Gabe. 360 isn't open either. But you don't complain about it because you make a lot of money off that platform. The money the reason to develop.
- Slasher, on 05/21/2010, -23/+43Good to see an independent, respected developer like Valve, filthy rich off of making some of the best games of all time, able to criticize and keep their titles off an entire platform, one as big as the PS3. And if i had to choose between Valve and Sony on the story here, I'm definitely going with Valve.
- dcoxen, on 05/21/2010, -1/+20He did work for Microsoft for a while. That's where the capital to fund Valve came from.
- Zahne, on 05/21/2010, -9/+27No they aren't
- DanteDefiance, on 05/21/2010, -1/+18Indeed. Gabe is the greatest PS3 troll of all time. I'm surprised he didn't just link to those silly "PS3 has no games" pictures:

http://tinyurl.com/23wsqqj - kingmanic, on 05/21/2010, -0/+17@Frepnog:
Steam- 25 million active accounts (some duplicates I had 2 at one point.)
PS3- 35 million shipped with 40 million PSN accounts (Duplicates as well. I have 1 Ps3 but my wife and I each have an account)
I think the numbers say no. But they aren't that far apart. - arekkusu, on 05/21/2010, -4/+20"Once you’re ready to begin developing Xbox 360 games, you will need to sign up for an XNA Creators Club Online Premium membership.
A Premium membership enables you to create and debug your games on Xbox 360. Also, it allows you to submit your creations for distribution on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
Once you sign in to the XNA Creators Club Online Web site, browse to the Membership page to sign up for a Premium membership, and, if necessary, an Xbox LIVE membership. You will be prompted to sign up for either a four-month Premium membership (49 in US Dollars) or annual (99 in US Dollars) membership."
http://creators.xna.com/en-US/create_detail - BeesKnees21, on 05/21/2010, -5/+20Dude maybe you should take a Valium or something.
- Ajajadude, on 05/21/2010, -1/+16PSN is hardly the only way to get content on a PS3. You forget they sell these nifty little plastic cases that have game discs inside.
- Zelgadiss, on 05/21/2010, -0/+14He is effectively in MS's pocket, but won't admit it publicly.
Hence his constant dodging (and BS replies when cornered) when asked about PS3 development. - diggid3, on 05/21/2010, -1/+14arrrgghhh, where's the unread-button???
- Zelgadiss, on 05/21/2010, -0/+13"Now, don't get me wrong, the X360 is a great console but ***** those overpriced accessories."
and it's horrible reliablity. - arekkusu, on 05/21/2010, -1/+13You said " Because I can download XNA Game Studio for free to create Xbox 360 games" you can't play the games you create on an Xbox 360 without a membership. I even quoted it but you apparently didn't bother to read it. Look : "A Premium membership enables you to CREATE and debug your games on Xbox 360." bold for emphasis. But please, continue with the name calling and nerd raging.
EDIT : It even says so here too : http://creators.xna.com/en-us/XNAGS3.1readme
EDIT 2 : @bmgibben Yep, that's for sure. - RevChris2, on 05/21/2010, -1/+13The fat ps3 ate his hero sub back in 2007, here it is in 2010 and the ps3 managed to slim up and Gabe is still fat. Its pure jealousy.
- jetx29, on 05/21/2010, -2/+14Read the article with the expectation that Newell was being facetious...apparently not... I'm guessing there's a big difference between the unpopular iPhone press and developing for Mac OSX as a computing platform.
- bluerei, on 05/21/2010, -3/+15You need to unscrew the casing on both the PS3 AND MAC to open. Gabe Newell is an idiot. They both open the exact same way.
- Tarantulus, on 05/21/2010, -11/+23O RLY? my PC is open, I can swap parts as and when I feel like it. can you do that on your mac?
- Chewie67, on 05/21/2010, -1/+12News Flash: Gabe Newell doesn't like the PS3.
In a related story, New Yorkers don't like the Boston Red Sox.
Apple doesn't like Adobe.
and Satan doesn't like Jesus. - norman619, on 05/21/2010, -2/+13LOL!!! Consoles are not open systems to begin with. They want an open system you don't need to go any further than a mainstream PC. Mac is hardly an "open" system.
- HappyScrappy, on 05/21/2010, -1/+12Immaterial. Open and easy are not measured on the same scale.
- directedition, on 05/21/2010, -6/+16Apple is a company of contradictions. I do believe Gabe was speaking in terms of technologies, one front that Apple actually is quite open about.
- ryan69969, on 05/21/2010, -7/+17I think Gabe Newell is becoming the George Lucas of gaming, and not in a good way.
- HappyScrappy, on 05/21/2010, -1/+11Gabe is talking about open, you're talking about easy. Open doesn't mean easy, and easy doesn't mean open.
- ed4649, on 05/21/2010, -0/+10http://knowyourmeme.com/i/000/044/004/original/gab ...
- Wreckage, on 05/21/2010, -4/+14I think that Gabe would like the PS3 to be more like a sandwich or a box of donuts.
- arekkusu, on 05/21/2010, -2/+11*raises hand*
I work for a game developer that has shipped MANY triple A titles. Sup ? What about you ? - arekkusu, on 05/21/2010, -2/+11So you can download it for free but you can't use it without a membership. Great.
That would be like downloading the free World of Warcraft client without having an active account. You can't play or do anything with it but it was FREE! - wonderchemist, on 05/21/2010, -7/+16How closed must you be for someone to tell you to open up like the Mac?
- Long189, on 05/21/2010, -16/+25Mac, open? Give me a break...
- BigLou, on 05/21/2010, -4/+13Yeah man! I mean, what the *****!?!?!
What is one of the most prolific and talented game developers in recent gaming history think he's talking about? He obviously doesn't have a clue. I mean, seriously, he's actually saying something pro-Apple? Doesn't he know Macs are for the N00bz?
THAT'S LUDICROUS! - Stalks, on 05/21/2010, -1/+10Dugg for "man-*****".
- Poffeloff, on 05/21/2010, -2/+11EA ported the "Orange Box" to the PS3. Point your finger the right way...
- bigbadgoat, on 05/21/2010, -1/+9*raises hand*
The last title I worked on is a current gen title that's sold over 4 million copies, and continues to sell well since being declared a "greatest hits/platinum" title.
I suppose I can say what I want about Gabe Newell being an asshat then, right? - kingmanic, on 05/21/2010, -1/+9technological road map for the console? I don't think any of the 3 have that. Each console generation is pretty much a fixed specification for it's lifespan and most alterations do not change the core hardware much. So a road map wouldn't be very meaningful.
Nintendo and Microsoft are also tight lipped about their next console so why ought Sony be different? - Show 51 - 100 of 239 discussions
