Florida Governor Vetoes Pro-Life Bill

E-mail Print PDF

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday vetoed a bill that had been described as the most significant pro-life measure in the state's history.

HB 1143 required women seeking abortions to obtain an ultrasound beforehand and have the image explained to them. The bill also prohibited private health insurers that receive state or federal subsidies from providing coverage for abortions.

Crist expressed concerns about HB 1143 shortly after it was passed in late April and strongly hinted that he would oppose the measure in mid-May. After Friday's veto, he said the bill "paces an inappropriate burden on [a] woman seeking to terminate a pregnancy," the Tampa Tribune reported.

"They write us from all over the world," he said. "Many of them feel like they drifted too far. This website helps them come home."

Christian music industry observers are expressing sadness upon hearing of the death of pioneer Dana Key, who with Eddie DeGarmo formed the first Christian group with a video broadcast on MTV.

Key died Sunday from a ruptured pulmonary embolism, according to his label, Ardent Records.

Key recorded a dozen albums as part of the Dove Award-winning duo DeGarmo & Key, and the pair wrote more than 40 Top 10 radio singles. Key founded ForeFront Records, and in 1995 helped launch the Christian rock Ardent Records and produced such artists as Big Tent Revival, Smalltown Poets and Skillet.
