- afoster2727, on 07/23/2010, -3/+112And yet Ink Cartridges still cost $45
OfficeMax:
Lexmark 80 Ink Cartridge, Tri-Color Your Price: $45.99 - Tyrghast, on 07/24/2010, -6/+79It probably supports Flash too. Developing nation: 1 Apple: 0
- GrowASet, on 07/24/2010, -0/+35$35 after mail-in rebate of $965.00
- cerilia, on 07/23/2010, -0/+35$35 dollars? I am very interested in the hardware. What is the touchscreen they are using that is so cheap? I can imagine an inexpensive microcontroller powering the device, but have trouble figuring out how they can get such a large touchscreen in the price range. It even boasts 2 gigs of memory, fairly impressive.
- Rudegar, on 07/24/2010, -2/+33"And we see those things on the road every day, huh? ;-)"
are you located in India ? - engineer09, on 07/23/2010, -13/+4335-dollar 'laptop' for schools.......WTF !!!!! Yes it's true but not for students, for teacher and their relatives, i still remember my school days whenever free product come to our school our teachers select their favorite color and design first. I am sure this product will not reach to brilliant student who are truly deserve it.
- ZephyrNinety, on 07/24/2010, -4/+32Oh look, an iPad at 1/15th the price. And it supports Flash.
- David513, on 07/24/2010, -5/+32Periodically, someone comes along promising something for almost nothing. Every time if happens, people get all excited, but that's before the "gotchas" become apparent. I don't know what the shortcomings of this device are, but I will predict two things, based on previous devices that have been announced with such fanfare:
1) It will never ship for a pice anywhere close to what they claim, even if it ships at all -- which is unlikely.
2) It will have shortcomings that will cause pretty much everybody here to lose interest in the real world.
This is going to be another CrunchPad (aka JooJoo) or XO-1. And you KNOW you see tons of those around, right? ;-) - LosAlamosLabs, on 07/24/2010, -3/+25India did pull off the $2,400 car though, so who knows . . .
http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Ext ... - justapolarbear, on 07/24/2010, -3/+25***** the iPad
- Rudegar, on 07/24/2010, -0/+21no but a linux kernel is in there
- truegrav, on 07/24/2010, -1/+22Woot now my college books cost more than my laptop
- arnoldlayne123, on 07/24/2010, -3/+21I think you is right!
- Pfkninenines, on 07/24/2010, -0/+16When it tries, all it does is get the Cry part correct.
- cnldelta, on 07/24/2010, -8/+23Can it run Crysis?
- XeroXenith, on 07/24/2010, -0/+13@David513: When it comes to cars, which are close to a necessity in most of the USA, you're absolutely right. People wouldn't want to risk two and a half grand on a car they would likely be embarrassed to drive anyway, and would far prefer something more expensive.
Technology, on the other hand, is fast-developing and people are more willing to make impulse purchases. I'm sure if this was by the counter for $35, many people would think, "ooh, a cheap laptop!" and just buy it. I know I would. Now try that with a car and you'll see it's not a fair comparison. - Pfkninenines, on 07/24/2010, -0/+10The newest normal Kindle is $189.. But I get your point.
- warriorpoetist, on 07/24/2010, -1/+9But you have to buy a soft-shell case with it for $600
- DeathToaster, on 07/24/2010, -3/+11Looks like someone is bitter...
- grexeo, on 07/24/2010, -0/+8I'll believe it when I can buy it. There's been plenty of these "cheap notebook/tablet/laptop" claims ever since and including the OLPC, the cheapest of which never materialize or end up costing more.
- fjortisar, on 07/24/2010, -0/+8That has to be a mistake. If they somehow sourced 2GB of ram for a few dollars, I want to get hooked up. I'm guessing they mean 2GB of flash storage.
- thefashionguru, on 07/24/2010, -0/+8Ha, I want one.
- mouchezdm, on 07/23/2010, -1/+9impressive 2gb ram!!! But am not sure about its lifespan...
http://www.mynucleus.org/story/2010/07/23/india_de ... - beatlemaniac007, on 07/24/2010, -0/+7Well which engineer isn't...
- shoziku, on 07/24/2010, -1/+8omg too funny. beaten by the 3rd world advancing to the next level.
- shoziku, on 07/24/2010, -0/+7but upon actually reading the article...
"The first users are expected to be university students with introduction of the Linux-based computing device targeted for next year." - bcronos, on 07/24/2010, -3/+10But a Kindle ebook reader costs $389... Go figure...
- okonisfree, on 07/24/2010, -1/+8They aren't trying to make huge profits or trying to please the nonexistent shareholders. That's why it's so cheap, it's sort of charity work.
- shubhkarman, on 07/24/2010, -2/+9iFrugal and iUsable Not an iRipOff
- phyx726, on 07/24/2010, -5/+12I would imagine it has to be using Android
- LosAlamosLabs, on 07/24/2010, -2/+8You can order that $80 laptop right off the website if you want to see it in real life. Heck, for $80, it would be fun just to see what something that cheap could actually do.
- shoziku, on 07/24/2010, -0/+6ya know, printing has always been a bad thing for some folks. they pay their bill online, get a confirmation email and print it. then stow it away in a file cabinet along with the other 300 pounds of paper products, including the paper bill itself they received in the mail. printing.. welcome back to the stone ages.
- hmugabe, on 07/24/2010, -0/+5that video of the old dude explaining it is awesome.
35 dollars. BAM suck on that! - LosAlamosLabs, on 07/24/2010, -1/+6I was bringing up the car more from a standpoint of Indian ingenuity, but when Geeks.com has a laptop that can be delivered for around $80, a $35 computer isn't all that crazy after all . . .
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=BLK-OE-A73 ... - piieerrrree, on 07/24/2010, -2/+7David513, what if you don't have the luxury to buy more expensive computers? What if your family lives on $300 per year? These computers are meant for developing or third-world countries, not first-world countries.
- gsm54321, on 07/24/2010, -0/+5One year I bought a $300 net book, and my text books came out to $450, so already there.
- doshindude, on 07/24/2010, -2/+6It would be pretty damn crippled if it wasn't. A straight up desktop Linux OS on a touch input only device is going to be horrifying.
- protodon, on 07/24/2010, -2/+6It was $100 dollars which ended up being $200+. We'll never see a tablet for $35 I can guarantee you that.
- helwa1988, 19 hr 27 min ago, -0/+4because people in india cannot afford to waste $500 on ipads like people in the west can. people can barely feed their families in india which is why they focus on making things cheap so every one can benefit.
- arnoldlayne123, 21 hr 3 min ago, -1/+5That laptop is for under privileged students.
And about cars, majority of the people here drive cars which make more than 14km/litre. And companies like tata export this to african countries ; where they have a good demand. - nullcodes, on 07/24/2010, -1/+5Obviously it's 2GB of flash memory, not RAM.
From what I calculated .. $35 is possible only if they are getting the touchscreen display for $5 to $10.
The cheapest ARM processor I could find was a 250 Mhz System on Chip for $6. The rest of the stuff like assembly cost, battery, 2 watt power supply, pcb, wifi etc. comes out to about $24.
They must be using pixel qi or some other cheap display tech. - Rockkybox, on 07/24/2010, -3/+7I don't really think they're competing for the same customers mate
- deathsting, 19 hr 9 min ago, -1/+5@David513 - I live in India and see a nano somewhere atleast once in a week. The truth its so cheap that everyone can afford one. In fact nanos sold out in India even before they were released (prebooking)
And these laptop aren't really meant for the general market. Its meant for under privileged students that lack money to buy books/textbook. In most cases the government pays for them to goto school and for their textbooks. Now imagine that the govt bought every child a cheap laptop that can be used as an ebook. - Tokeli, on 07/24/2010, -1/+4Well, the one big difference is a government is developing this, instead of some company trying to milk money out of third world countries' need for super-cheap computers. I am fairly sure that thing will be out next year just as they say.
- egemenbor, on 07/24/2010, -0/+3@shoziku
you just described my dad right there...bills dating back several years stored in many different folders.. - edwartica, on 07/24/2010, -2/+5Holy *****! What the ***** is wrong with you? Seriously, you gotta get some therapy or something. ***** racist.
- SimKill, on 07/24/2010, -0/+3Hey, you gotta remember that they'll get reduced prices for bulk orders (unless you already factored that in)
And by calliing pixelqi 'cheap' you just made me feel bad and simultaneously remember how much margin them people have on end users :-(
For a reference, a pixelqi screen was selling for netbooks for $275 a few days ago iirc - SimKill, on 07/24/2010, -1/+4We won't.
We'll use those laptops connected to the internet to steal more jobs - LosAlamosLabs, on 07/24/2010, -3/+6@wrangler - If you read up on the Tata, there was a lot of ingenuity through every step of the design process. It wasn't just 100% cheap labor and materials.
- diablozx9, on 07/24/2010, -0/+2Like OpenOffice maybe?
