- xaeropain, on 07/07/2010, -33/+1486This makes me sick. I should see a Dr. No, I take that back. Anyone From Russia with Love in their heart knows that no Goldfinger can cancel Bond. You would have to have one hell of a Thunderball to pull this off. I mean really, You Only Live Twice On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and just as Diamonds Are Forever, the Bond series should Live And Let Die The Man With The Golden Gun. The Spy Who Loved Me would not give into this Moonraker. These movies are For Your Eyes Only and we should Never say Never Again. Octopussy was such a great movie! I mean, there was A View To A Kill that could knock The Living Daylights out of you. You would need License To Kill to get rid of Bond forever. He had such a GoldenEye for the hot girl. But Who knows, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough for this hero to Die Another Day. Now he will have to retire away, gambling his fortune away at the Casino Royale. Oh how I yearn for that Quantum Of Solace.
- kitsua, on 07/07/2010, -3/+620Comprehensive, chronological and completely convoluted. Congrats!
- kitsua, on 07/07/2010, -8/+392There's no way a money-printing franchise like that would be allowed to die. Someone will buy it and revive it and milk that mother 'till the end of cinema.
It's the easiest thing in the world to make a 007 film. The entire idea of James Bond is now pure cliché from start to finish. Making a Bond movie is like cinema by numbers; every element is just ticking boxes that the audience expect - fill each one they'll come running, wallets in hand. Go for a 'reboot' each time you get a new actor to play the anachronistic lead character and then coast for a few more before starting again. Same old, same old. - ThwartedVillain, on 07/07/2010, -14/+379I thought the new direction was great. I liked the gritty, haunted James Bond.
It was like Bond's first breakup which is the source for his totally cold and callous nature later.
Don't tell me you wanna go back to the Roger Moore days or the later Brosnan days where the obligatory gadgets segment was pointless slapstick.
I thought Daniel Craig was bringing back the kind of mood that Connery gave us, the suave, but totally badass bond who is one mofo you don't want to joke with. - Tokeli, on 07/07/2010, -2/+343"No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die."
- XtraWhite, on 07/07/2010, -3/+343i want to have sex with this comment
- algaeturd, on 07/07/2010, -1/+203Come the ***** on.
Hollywood has no new ideas. They made Charlie's Angels into a ***** movie, for God's sake. You think they're going to just abandon one of the most popular franchises in movie history?
Sounds like a desperate attempt to get someone to start a grassroots campaign to inject some new energy and vigor into it.
Tell people you're taking it away and watch the fans froth at the mouth for it and demand it. - dlan4327, on 07/07/2010, -50/+238I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand I hated the new direction they were taking Bond in. Dark and gritty is great but Bond to me was always about suspension of disbelief and just pure craziness. It was about knives in briefcases, magnetic watches and cars that had more tech than the NASA control room.
On the other hand there's always been Bond films. I have never lived a moment of my life without knowing there'll be a Bond film sooner or later. In that sense this is rather depressing. I can only hope somebody picks it up. - cloudberries, on 07/07/2010, -1/+177Alas, it seems Bond may have finally met his [untitled Bond 23] with this one.
- shardsofapertur, on 07/07/2010, -18/+190I thought a 00 number was a license to kill, not get killed
- Tarantulus, on 07/07/2010, -7/+133Goldeneye was awesome.
- sgerwel1985, on 07/07/2010, -4/+111This makes me sick... Just as the franchise was heading in the right direction.
- designet, on 07/07/2010, -5/+105the problem is that is WAS heading it totally the wrong direction, they'd gone TOO far.
The series just got sillier and sillier until you ended up with ***** invisible cars and the audience, at THAT exact point, stood as one and said "hold the ***** on..."
They went TOO far...the reboot was needed
If you look back at the Sean Connery films, then yes, he had some pretty advanced (for it's day) stuff, but it was always just high-tech, never 'magical' , you didn't have to suspend your disbelief THAT much to think that the military and government agencies MIGHT JUST have that kind of tech at their disposal....and he wasn't indestructible...just a damn hard bloke...the whole Pierce Brosnan era Bond just bordered on fantasy. - Fallout22, on 07/07/2010, -14/+103"No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to dBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"
- rickpelletier, on 07/07/2010, -1/+79Once again, digg needs a "Comment of the Day" button...
- galvo, on 07/07/2010, -2/+63No way :(
Time to bring back Sean Connery. - ThwartedVillain, on 07/07/2010, -1/+61I'd agree with you with the Moore era and the last few Brosnan films, but the new incantation of Bond wasn't really like that. There's a bigger story arch in the new movies and it was just about to get really interesting when they go after the international spy network that has infiltrated all ranks of government.
There were no supervillains this time around. They were more realistic villains, opportunistic and ethically bankrupt businessmen who took advantage of bad situations. Nobody was holding the world hostage or trying to start a war or blow up the moon. - Vioarr, on 07/07/2010, -0/+58The thing that you may be missing though (and this is not a slight against you) is that Craig's Bond is still reeling from Vesper's deception and ultimate betrayal. As you probably know, Casino Royale was the first Bond novel and set the tone for why Bond is so disconnected from his emotions and has issues with anything more than a one night stand with women.
Personally I always thought the cheesy one liners and silly gadgets were a bi-product of the 80's, 1/2 Inspector Gadget and 1/2 Dragnet. I found it very enjoyable to depart from a cookie cutter plot line (which to be fair was a staple in the early/mid Bond Franchise) and it was great to see a Bond actually show flashes of emotion.
I will say that Quantam was certainly a bit lackluster in comparison to Casino Royale, but overall these two movies trumped Timothy Dalton's and to a lesser extent Roger Moore. Sean Connery will always be the best 007 in my book, but Daniel Craig certainly is an extremely close second. - FormerBabby, on 07/07/2010, -1/+56No further comments are necessary.
- Jektal, on 07/07/2010, -0/+552 movies. They made Charlie's Angels into 2 ***** movies.
- kitsua, on 07/07/2010, -1/+48Come come, calm yourself, cretin.
- RLovell, on 07/07/2010, -3/+49You're amazing.
- dougm68, on 07/07/2010, -1/+44I once saw Sean Connery make love to not one but octopussy's. (how's that?)
- ThwartedVillain, on 07/07/2010, -2/+43I third that statement, Goldeneye was awesome, thus the distinction for the "later Brosnan films".
- Zelf24, on 07/07/2010, -0/+40"James Bond Will Return" In...
- ArrowheadAddict, on 07/07/2010, -7/+46Craig's Bond was just getting comfortable, just getting to the point where he could actually be smooth, and he had just gotten a director who could do him justice. Somebody snatch this franchise up. On the other hand, this frees Craig up before he gets Pierce Brosnaned.
- Rhawk187, on 07/07/2010, -0/+36I'll pay $5,000 for the rights.
- allisonaxe, on 07/07/2010, -4/+40Knives in briefcases? Magnetic watches? Carnations that squirt cyanide? flamethrower pens? Those are the tools of the joke-shop spy!
- Skyplatoon, on 07/07/2010, -3/+38Well said and i completely agree with you. The new direction completely legitimized and justified James Bond anew. Someone will pick this up, and yes, Goldeneye was awesome.
- foxifiednutbar, on 07/07/2010, -1/+36
Because no one wears a tuxedo in a Casino anymore - wild, on 07/07/2010, -2/+35I've read the books, so I prefer the newer movies.
- linuxabuser, on 07/07/2010, -1/+33Do not attempt to combine monitor and penis.
- jfitz369, on 07/07/2010, -0/+32Relax, they'll eventually bring it back.
- brockorr, on 07/07/2010, -2/+31not really... The plot seemed a bit 'small', but it really isn't a standalone movie. Its more of an extension (or addition) to the plot of Casino.
The motif of Quantum of Solace is revenge. Revenge against the people who caused what happened at the end of Casino Royale.
Also Quantum picks up literally hours after Casino (which puts things in a different perspective).
Watch em back to back and it makes a lot more sense. - ThwartedVillain, on 07/07/2010, -0/+29I think the feel of the films with Daniel crag and pre-Craig are totally different. In the new films, you actually feel for the guy. A bond film is reminding us all of our first break ups with girls who lied or cheated on us or something and what we wish we could have done about it, i.e. "The bitch is dead" *hangup* Bond kills some ***** for deadening up his girlfriend.
I didn't like QoS when I saw it, but that's because I think all our expectations were really high after Casino Royale. I recently watched QoS again and found it really entertaining.
My point is that Craig, so far, is the most fully fleshed out Bond we've had. He isn't this one-dimensional playboy assassin who never sweats anything as women slide off him like beads of water on a duck. He's actually messed up about Vespir Lynd, which is cool to see from a character who doesn't get all The Notebook on us. - DanielHunter, on 07/07/2010, -0/+28AS THE VILLAIN!
- McNerd, on 07/07/2010, -1/+27Well said. And this is what people easily forget: Connery's Bond was cold and plain mean when he had to be. And while he knew how to be smooth and move through high society, his standard operating procedure was "Always poke the bear," and he was happy to be the rude ***** at the baccarat table if that would help.
And he was truly misogynistic. People easily dismiss that last part, since they had to tone it down after Connery, and since nowadays the Bond movie is practically its own genre (questioning his attitude towards women seems as silly as debating whether the ends justify the means in driving a tank through the streets of Moscow). But if you look back it's really undoubtable.
The reason people forget this is because the glamorous formal settings of Bond (exotic settings in general, really) are what seem to set it apart from other movies. Lots of movies have gun-toting ***** that get angry like normal people: it's not remarkable or quotable. But it's a necessary part of the formula. - Phyltre, on 07/07/2010, -1/+27I just read that as "flamethrower penis." I'm at a loss now.
- Frostek, on 07/07/2010, -1/+26JAMES BOND WILL RETURN!
- sTiKyt, on 07/07/2010, -6/+31Impressive but I would have come up with a better sentence for Octopussy.
- workharderscum, on 07/07/2010, -0/+25But did they really kill him, or did they just put him in some over elaborate, easily escapable death trap?
- Fallout22, on 07/07/2010, -1/+26Pass the Broccoli.
- graemee, on 07/07/2010, -2/+27"No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to bankrupt."
- Phyltre, on 07/07/2010, -0/+23A five-dollar footlong.
- RealmDown, on 07/07/2010, -0/+22For years (years!) after Thunderball, people, divers, et al. were calling in wanting information about the "rebreather." 4 minutes of air in a small tube.
- themapleboy, on 07/07/2010, -1/+23dont sell it to this guy the film will have a $5 budget (and thats that one footlong he bought for lunch)
- McNerd, on 07/07/2010, -0/+22The funny thing is, this has happened several times. Moonraker is an example from the Roger Moore days where there was a backlash because it just got too silly (laser guns in space?) And if you consider the actors as representing different eras, they alternate in an interesting pattern. Connery set the baseline, Lazenby was dead serious, Moore made comedies, Dalton was arguably as raw as Craig, and Brosnan tried to play it straight sometimes but was arguably the most suave 007, and his producers mostly played on that and made cheesy action porn, and finally you have
Honestly I think 007 struggles with its own cliches. The popular wisdom is that 007 is all tuxedos and martinis and gadgets and explosions, which I don't think is true. All that stuff has its place but when there isn't some real substance (and, I think, some grit), the movies turn crappy. - acknotSW, on 07/07/2010, -1/+22I love a lot of Joss's work, but he would probably turn bond into a woman, litterally.
- calcio327, on 07/07/2010, -0/+21What the *****. Bring Bond back!
- Random314, on 07/07/2010, -1/+22Yeah, damn I'll bet thousands of hard core Bonds fan are shaken with anger. This news will undoubtedly stir up some controversies.
