Good to know there still are people who love America. Even Americans seem to hate America nowadays. Being anti-American seems to be cool. This needs to change.

I know that Fischer has engaged in unintelligible actions and released inflammatory anti-American sound bytes, but I find it far more sick that nearly every person on this board is incapable of recognizing the signs of a serious mental illness. I understand that Fischer's comments can be infuriating, but as somebody who studies psychology I find it appalling that any remotely intelligent person in this era would feel such hate for somebody who is clearly not in their right state of mind.
Wacko? Freak? Screwball? Have we evolved at all in the past century? The guy is clearly unstable, but don't degrade everybody with a mental illness because one high profile case pissed you off. One of my closest friends is a psych graduate student, and works with metally ill individuals at group home. He says he is often told of government plots and other Fischer-like conspiracies, but it's not because the patients are evil--they are simply unwell.
And in regards to Fischer's being anti-semetic, I believe he has issued some anti-Jewish-federal-plot type rhetoric over the years, and he may have been a member of a Christian cult at one point (not sure, though). However, in actuality, Fischer's Mother Regina, and his birth father (Not his mother's husband) were both Jewish, so again, I think it's probably a facet of the illness. Ironically, Borris Spassky (The Russian Fischer defeated for the title) is Jewish, as is Waitzkin.

And, just because he has a Jewish mother doesn't make him not an anti-Semite. I don't have the time to dig up some if his more memorable quotes about the 'Jews,' but do some searching and you'll find your own. He was also known to study the Mein Kampf, and other such literature, as well as hand out white power pamphlets while living in California. He was quite a Hitler fan. Again, I don't have the time right now to post the links, but do some of your own research on the man; you'll find it's all quite true.

Fischer deserves the ridicule. Not just because he’s sick in the head, but also because he’s just an all around piece of excrement. Undeniably one of the world's finest Chess minds, but that’s certainly no excuse.

Let it go. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has been convinced by Fischer to become anti-american or anti-semitic who was not already anti-american or anti-semitic. He has never harmed anyone, and the charges for which he was wanted were nonsense. He was wanted for playing chess, for Christ's sake. Indeed, he violated no act of congress but was wanted for violating a "presidential directive". Last time I checked, the constitution did not grant the president legislative powers.

Two points: 1. Let's cut Fischer a break because he is clearly disturbed and was, in the past, a great and decent person of unique accomplishment. Being forced to leave one's homeland by bogus "laws" probably can cause an almost irrational hatred that otherwise would never have existed (Love is easily turned into hatred; anybody who has seen a nasty divorce can attest to this) 2. An earlier poster's assumption that the State department was in the right on this matter is extremely disturbing and unAmerican. Frankly, as an American, I should be able to contract in whatever way I chose. Playing chess did not affect the war in Yugoslavia in any way---it was ridiculous to apply this "executive order" against him. Besides, I find these new founded legislative powers on the part of the executive very, very disturbing indeed. Please look up "seperation of powers" and then tell me that the president was not acting in opposition to the constitution.

i don't know what the big deal is. before this movie, the majority had no idea who he was. this movie just helped him in the spot, which is what he wanted or he wouldn't made a spectacle of himself like he did. and what's more, the movie made him look good. he is a freak regardless of people's views.

Finally, a reasonable response. Bobby Fischer was obviously seriously mentally ill. Getting angry at someone like that is the equivalent of getting angry at a dog for chewing up your shoes.

Sorry if all you pro-American turds are butthurt at the fact that you've been committing genocide almost non-stop since you wiped out the Native Americans and introduced eugenics to the Nazis. I am neither pro or anti-American. America is just a country. It is not the promised land. It is not favored by god, which is obvious considering your state of affairs in 2011. America has done many great things, but you've also done things that make the Nazis look like boy scouts.

I'm not saying the USA is perfect or even angelic, but to claim that the US has "been committing genocide almost non-stop" has to have some evidence to back it up. Otherwise you look just as foolish as Bobby Fischer with a mouth.
