Three principles to help fix your marriage before it’s too late

It is said that every relationship we have is either growing and moving forward or sliding backward and deteriorating. Relationships never stand still very long.

We’ve certainly noticed this in our marriage. There were times when not only were we sliding backward; we’d almost slipped over the edge. But something always kept us from going too far, and eventually we got back on track.

Even when we were moving forward, though, we found that it still wasn’t easy or pain-free. We are living proof that great marriages don’t just happen but always result from hard work. What we are experiencing today as a couple makes yesterday’s work worth it all.

Three basic principles, which we share here, have kept our marriage on track. When we’ve taught them in seminars and retreats, other couples have enjoyed similar results. We believe your marriage will benefit from them too.

Is Revenge the Answer?

The Bible tells us not to take revenge (Rom. 12:19). When we have been deeply hurt, it’s natural for us to want to get even. The problem is getting even does not restore what was done to you. You may feel better at first, but it leaves you with more problems and feelings of bitterness. Choose today to forgive.

Is Something Crawling In Your Refrigerator?

WE OFTEN ALLOW OUR LIVES TO GET CLOGGED WITH ENVY, JEALOUSY AND OTHER KINDS OF ROTTENNESS. IT'S TIME TO TOSS OUT THE LEFTOVERS!

It shocks people to learn that my five kids consume about two gallons of milk and a loaf of bread--every single day. That's why trips to our local grocery store are quite the adventure for me. I'm always pretty pleased with myself when I don't pass out after the cashier announces the total amount I owe.

Most of the time cashiers and bag boys have no idea I'm buying just one week's worth of groceries. They automatically assume I'm stockpiling for some impending disaster. But they're not totally off-base. The impending disaster comes as I try to fit an aisle's worth of groceries into a tenth-of-an-aisle-sized kitchen.

Weight for the Holidays

It's not only turkey's that get fattened up at christmas. If we're not careful, well-meaning friends can cause us to put on unwanted pounds.

At the risk of sounding like Ebenezer Scrooge, I will state unequivocally that I dislike the holidays. From sunup on Thanksgiving until sundown on New Year's, I am provided with unparalleled high-calorie grazing options and numerous chocolate-consuming opportunities. These memorable moments in munching are the recipe for diet disaster.

The task of keeping my weight in check and my thighs to a minimum is complicated by my "friends" who inconsiderately bake calorie-laden treats, slap them on a festively decorated holiday plate and then give them to me! They apparently assume that I don't mind having my derriere look like two humongous hot air balloons stuck together.

Grieve Not the Holy Spirit

Daily my heart is cleaving more closely to Christ and getting more detached from earthly objects. The weaning process is going on. I find the closer I get to the heart of Infinite Love—the nearer to the Son of Righteousness—the more sensitively do I feel, to my heart's deepest core, everything that is contrary in spirit, word or action to the law of love.

If we do, indeed, get nearer to the Son of Righteousness, we cannot help but see with greater vividness everything that is unrighteous and unlovely. And then the sight of the eyes will affect the heart.

Why You're Not Satisfied

People who are born again do not automatically have a sense of the nearness of God.

Intimacy with Jesus is the context in which the deep longing in our hearts for more of Him is progressively satisfied. People who are born again do not automatically have a sense of the nearness of God. Effective ministry produces a satisfaction that comes through helping others and being useful in God's kingdom, but it is not the same as the satisfaction that comes from encountering God in our inner man. The Holy Spirit may give spiritual gifts to believers and release His power through us, but these things do not ultimately satisfy the desire in our hearts for more of God. When our spiritual hunger is not being satisfied, we will experience frustrating spiritual boredom and restlessness.
