TOP 5 STORIES By Robert "Rob" Redding Jr. Editor & Publisher
1. President Obama - He is the most controversial man in America. Is he a socialist? Is he a Muslim? Is he even an American citizen? He was and will continue to be the focal point of most news - from his tax compromise to his "Whose ass to kick" response during the catastrophic Gulf oil spill. 2. Black unemployment rate - The recession is reported to be over but black unemployment still surged to its highest yet. The rate was a staggering 16.3 percent in August. 3. Health care - After bitter political wrangling, President Obama was able to sign into law one of his major campaign promises a $1 trillion health care overhaul intended to expand coverage to more Americans. But Republicans used public misgivings about parts of the plan as a springboard for election gains, and the overhaul faced a welter of lawsuits challenging its constitutionality.
4. U.S. elections - President Obama called it a "shellacking" an election in which the Republicans surged to a majority in the House of Representatives, and gained more governor's offices and legislative majorities. The Democrats were able to hang on to their edge in the Senate, leaving the U.S. with at least two years of divided government.
5. Haiti earthquake - Already the Western Hemisphere's most destitute nation, Haiti was shattered by an earthquake on Jan. 12 that killed at least 230,000 and left millions homeless. Crucial reconstruction projects were slow to get started; disease and political instability added to the woes. (The Associated Press contributed to this report) |

What's more, Michelle more than makes up for what her husband lacks in the polls. This is still the power couple of the year. 2. Michael Steele led Republicans to a historic win.
3. Al Sharpton led the charge to keep radio host Rush

icon to be
tossed off the air.
4. Oprah Winfrey is expected to make a big splash with her OWN network. 5. Bishop Eddie Long became the face of what is right and wrong with the black church, as it relates to gays in the church. |
