How to Trade Your Items

Submitting a Trade-In

Creating a Trade-In Online

To trade-in an item for an Amazon.com Gift Card online, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Visit the Trade-In Store and search for eligible items.
  2. Once you find an item you wish to sell/exchange at the displayed price, click the Trade in button to add items to your trade-in submission.
  3. To add more items, click the "Add another item" link.
  4. Once you've added all the items you wish to trade-in to your submission, review the condition description for each item and select the condition of your item based on the criteria listed. Make sure you read and agree to the Trade-In Program Terms & Conditions, then click the Continue button.
  5. Select a shipping method from the available options: UPS Ground or U.S. Postal Service Media Mail. Note: USPS Media Mail is not available for submissions containing video game items.
  6. Select or enter an address from which you ship your items. Note: This address will be used to return any items that are not accepted.
  7. Select a return option to either (i) accept a lower Gift Card amount or (ii) receive your item back, subject to the Trade-In Program Terms if your item was considered to be in a lower condition than what you specified.
  8. Review your trade-in submission; then click the Submit your trade-in button to print a shipping label.
  9. Ship your items within 7 calendar days of submitting the trade-in.

If you are shipping multiple trade-in orders, please do not include items from other trade-in orders to ensure that your trade-in is correctly processed. Each shipping label is uniquely assigned to a specific trade-in, so every shipment must be sent using the separate mailing labels created for the trade-in.

Making a Trade-In in Person

Amazon is testing a program at a limited number of colleges and universities that allows customers to trade in textbooks to Amazon in person. To see more details and currently scheduled events, visit our Trade In Textbooks In Person help page.

Trade-In Eligibility & Limits

Customer Eligibility

To participate in the Program, you must (a) be at least 18 years old, (b) ship your products only from the United States and (c) have a physical address or P.O. Box located in the United States. Products shipped from outside the United States will not be accepted or returned.

Eligible Products & Condition Criteria

The item you wish to trade in must match the exact version displayed in the Trade-In search results or on the product page on Amazon.com. You can also look for details on the product by clicking on the product title, which will take you to the product detail page.

Items that don't meet the product description or eligibility criteria are considered not acceptable and will be subject to the Trade-In Return Terms and Conditions. Rejected Items that are eligible for return will be shipped to you within 14 days after receipt, at no cost to you. Rejection reasons and shipping progress tracking for the return package can be viewed from Your Trade-In Account.

If items are returned and you still wish to submit the item(s), please complete a new trade-in submission from the Amazon Trade-in Store.

Trade-In Limits

You can trade in multiple eligible items, with the following restrictions:

  • Each individual trade-in shipment is limited to a total value of up to $750. If you want to trade in items with a total value greater than $750, you'll need to make multiple trade-in shipments.
  • You can trade in up to a quantity of 2 identical items within any 3 month period. For example, if you sent in one copy of a video game on January 1st and sent one more copy of the same video game before March 31st, you'll be eligible to trade-in the third copy on April 1st.

See additional Return Terms and Conditions.

Packing and Shipping Your Trade-in

To help prevent loss or damage in transit, please make sure that you properly pack the items you are shipping. Guidelines on packing your video games, movies, and textbook items are given below. Game controllers and heavier items like textbooks should be packed carefully.

Creating Shipping Labels for Multiple Packages

To generate multiple shipping labels for your trade-in:

  1. Go to Your Trade-in Account.
  2. Find your trade-in order and click the Print Shipping Label button.
  3. Click the "Need more than one shipping label?" link underneath the "Print" icon.
  4. Click on the Add label button to create more shipping labels.

Packaging Guidelines

To help prevent loss or damage in transit, please make sure that you properly pack the items you are shipping. Guidelines on packing your video games, movies, and textbook items are given below. Game controllers and heavier items like textbooks should be packed carefully.

  1. Use small, sturdy boxes and ensure that you double tape the bottom and the top ends of the box.
  2. Pack your item or items in a box that will leave as little empty space as possible.
  3. You can fill any empty space in the box with foam, air pillows and/or full sheets of crumpled paper. This will help prevent the items from shifting around and being damaged or lost in transit.
  4. Use a good tape (e.g. a 2 inch strong tape) to pack the box securely. Apply at least 3 stripes to the top and bottom flaps of the box.

Please refer to the additional packaging guidelines at the following websites:

We recommend getting sufficient insurance for all trade-in shipments, as Amazon is not responsible for goods that are damaged or lost in the mail.

Note: The U.S. Postal Service Media Mail option is not available for orders containing video game items.

Shipping Your Trade-In

Ship your items only to the address printed on the shipping label. Please do not ship your item(s) to any other addresses. If you do, you will not receive an Amazon.com Gift Card, and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to return your item(s) to you.

According to the current U.S. Postal Service regulations, packages less than 13 oz. (up to approximately 3 games/DVDs) can be dropped in a blue U.S. Postal Service mail collection box or handed to your letter carrier. Packages larger than 13 oz. must be sent from your local Post Office. Trade-in submissions shipped via U.S. Postal Service Media Mail may take up to 10 business days to arrive before your submission is processed. Trade-in submissions shipped via UPS may take up to 6 business days to arrive before your submission is processed.

To find your closest UPS location, visit the UPS Drop Off Locator or go to www.ups.com and select "Drop Off."

Note: Your trade-in shipment must be postmarked within 7 calendar days of submitting the trade-in.

Getting Paid for Your Trade-in

If your submission is accepted, an Amazon.com Gift Card for the value of your trade-in will appear in your Amazon.com account, generally within 2 business days. Your gift card payment is automatically added to the available balance on your account so you don't need to redeem any claim codes or wait for gift cards in the mail.

If you have not received your Amazon.com Gift Card (or received your returned item, if rejected) within 30 days after you submitted your item, please contact Customer Service via phone, chat, or e-mail by clicking the Contact Us button on any Help page.

You can see your submission history, status, and payment information in Your Trade-In Account.

Trade-in Price Conditions

You will only receive the price quoted (in Amazon.com Gift Card value) for an item if:

  • The item meets the trade-in condition guidelines as described in Determining Product Eligibility.
  • You make your submission and print a mailing label while the price is still posted.
  • Your package is postmarked within 7 calendar days of submitting your trade-in shipment.
  • Your items are verified and accepted by us or the merchant.

Managing Your Trade-in Submission

Changing Your Trade-In

You can't change your trade-in after it has been submitted. However, you can cancel and re-submit another trade-in.

If you want to only send some of the items from your trade-in, but not all, it is ok to send them with the trade-in you submitted. The missing items will be marked as "missing" and you'll be paid for the items received if they're accepted after inspection.

If you want to trade in additional items, you can create another trade-in. Please do not include items from other trade-in orders to ensure that your trade-in is correctly processed. Each shipping label is uniquely assigned to a specific trade-in, so every shipment must be sent using the separate mailing labels created for the trade-in.

Make sure to include corresponding packing slips for the trade-ins submitted.

Canceling Your Trade-In

You can cancel your trade-in information any time before you actually package and ship your trade-in. Simply visit Your Trade-In Account and click the Cancel button under the trade-in transaction ID.

If you've already shipped your trade-in but changed your mind, please visit Your Trade-In Account and click the Cancel button under the trade-in transaction ID to request a cancellation. If your submission hasn't been processed already and it was canceled, your trade-in will be returned to you and no gift card will be issued.

Once you receive an Amazon.com Gift Card in exchange for your item, you won't be able cancel the trade-in and request that your item be returned to you.

Trade-ins not received within 30 days of submission will automatically be canceled.

Tracking Says "Delivered;" Package Not Received/Lost

If your package was processed through a post office or courier, tracking details may say 'Delivered' once it arrives at our or the carrier's facility, but it may take a day or two to arrive at the merchant's facility.

If you've waited a couple of days and you still have not received any communication regarding your Trade-In items:

  • Check the tracking details again. Please verify if the tracking details have been updated with information on the delivery of your package. If the carrier mistakenly reported your package as delivered, it may have been corrected. Occasionally, due to bad weather conditions the carrier might mark the package as delivered even if it is still in transit.
  • Contact the carrier. Ask if they have additional information about the package's location. (Have your tracking or delivery confirmation number handy.)
  • Contact Amazon.com Customer Service. Please use your Trade-In submission number or carrier tracking number when communicating with the customer service associate.

Note: Trade-in submissions shipped via U.S. Postal Service Media Mail may take up to 10 business days to arrive, and UPS Ground may take up to 6 business days to arrive before your submission is processed. The packages you sent can be tracked anytime in Your Trade-in Account.
