Crochet Hat Swedish Color Scheme

"This version of Crochet Hat was inspired by the color scheme of the crocheted hats worn by Sweden’s Olympic athletes during the Opening Ceremonies (Note: this is not the hat worn by the athletes, but I wanted to use the color combo in a quick and easy project.) " -- Kathy North

The pattern was worked to the 77 st point with sport/light worsted wt. yarn on a size H hook, changing the 4 colors at random in this sequence:

5 rnds off-white
1 rnd black
2 rnds pale yellow
4 rnds baby blue
2 rnds off-white
2 rnds pale yellow
1 rnd black
5 rnds baby blue
3 rnds pale yellow
2 rnds off-white
1 rnd black
4 rnds baby blue

Use dark colors: gray, tan, brown, navy, dark green, black, camouflage.
Materials:  1 ball light-worsted weight or sport-weight wool or acrylic yarn (thinner,  softer yarns make more flexible crocheted hats)
Size H or I hook  (or size to obtain gauge)

Gauge:  approx. 4 sts = 1" in single crochet

NOTE: Hat sizes may vary depending on yarn thickness and hook size. As you crochet, try hat on your own head to determine snug fit and suitable length to cover ears.  Rounds are worked continuously, DO NOT JOIN.  Use contrast yarn to mark beginning of round.

Rnd 1: Chain 2, 6 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook (or use "loop around finger" technique for starting loop, then pull to close ring when hat is complete).
Rnd 2: Sc in first sc, 2 sc in ea sc around  (11 sc)
Rnd 3: *(2 sc in ea sc), rep from * around (22 sc)
Rnd 4: Sc in ea sc around (22 sc)
Rnd 5: *(Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around (33 sc)
Rnd 6: Sc in ea sc around (33 sc)
Rnd 7: *(Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around (44 sc)
Rnd 8: Sc in ea sc around (44 sc)
Rnd 9: *(Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around (55 sc)
Rnd 10: Sc in ea sc around (55 sc)
Rnd 11: *(Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around (66 sc)
Rnd 12: Sc in ea sc around (66 sc)

If hat seems big enough at this point, skip to Rnd 16. If not, keep increasing.
Rnd 13: *(Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around (77 sc)
Rnd 14: Sc in ea sc around (77 sc)

If hat seems big enough at this point, skip to Rnd 16. If not, increase one more time:
Rnd 15: *(Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around (88 sc)

Rnd 16: Sc in ea sc around.
Rep Rnd 16 until hat measures approx. 8" to 9" from beginning.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

IF NECESSARY TO MAKE HAT FIT MORE SNUGLY OVER EARS, WORK A DECREASE ROUND BEFORE FINISHING OFF, AS FOLLOWS:
*(Sc in next 5 sc, sc next 2 sc tog), rep from * around (don't worry if you have a few sts left over). Work 1 or 2 rounds even, fasten off and weave in ends.
