Provincial Role

Different ministries oversee the legislation that gives the OMB its jurisdiction to hear appeals or applications. The OMB does not make legislation. The information below tells you which ministry is responsible for specific legislation that directs the OMB. For more information about legislation, view the Legislation and Regulations page.

Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH)

The primary responsibilities of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) are policy development for local government and urban affairs, land-use planning, building regulation, rural development and housing. The ministry also has direct program delivery responsibilities, primarily for rent regulation and landlord and tenant dispute resolution, Planning Act approvals and rural development programs.

Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG)

The Ministry of the Attorney General is responsible for providing a fair and accessible justice system, which reflects the needs of the diverse communities it serves across government and the province. It strives to manage the justice system in an equitable, affordable and accessible way throughout the province. The Ministry of the Attorney General is the ministry under which the OMB operates.

Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR)

The Ministry of Natural Resources is committed to protecting and managing the province's natural resources, or its "natural capital," and making the interest from that capital available for individuals, communities and economies that depend on it. In doing so, the ministry contributes to the environmental, social and economic well-being of the people of Ontario, meeting not only today's needs, but also ensuring these resources are available for future generations.

Ministry of Culture (MOC)

The Ministry of Culture encourages the arts and cultural industries, protects Ontario's heritage and advances the public library system in order to maximize their contribution to the province's economic and social vitality.

The ministry implements strategies to promote and market Ontario's cultural and heritage attractions to realize their full economic potential. It works with local communities and cultural agencies to preserve Ontario's culture and heritage.
