I live in Stredokluky (a village near Prague, Czech republic). I play both practical and correspondence chess. My rating in practical chess (Czech national ELO) oscillates somewhere between 2010 and 2060, in correspondence chess I have rating 2155 (my best was 2220 in the middle of 90's). I have no special favorite player but I like to view good games of old masters (Tarrasch, Schlechter, Chigorin etc.)

Jan-15-13 Carlsen vs Anand, 2012 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: Fine play by Magnus but very poor play by Vishy. 24...Rc6?! (why not 24...Qd6?), 25...Ne8? (if 24...Rc6 makes any sense at all, then it is preparation of transfer of the Queen to the KS for the defence and so something like 25...Qd8 26.Qh6 Kh8 27.Ng5 Qg8 looks more ...

Jan-09-13 Kasparov vs Karpov, 1985 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: <King Sacrificer: I find the pawn-winning combo after 30. Rde3 beautiful.> Yes, it is pretty. But it is just a culmination of very powerful attack against almost perfect defence. After the 23rd move, when black could have tried 23...Bf6!? instead of 23...Bf8, I see no ...

Jan-03-13 Boleslavsky vs Bronstein, 1953 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: Why not 44...Nxd5?

Jan-02-13 Fischer vs Larsen, 1958 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 24.Qg5 or 25.Qg5 using the pin of Pe5 looks like quite interesting possibility of white which can be even stronger than the text continuation.

   Jan-01-13 Magnus Carlsen (replies)

Honza Cervenka: <jsy: I saw a study recently that suggests that the current top 40 players are stronger than Karpov from the 70s. This plays into my belief that there is no rating inflation in the absolute sense. A 2700 rated world champion Karpov is in fact lower rated than the current ...

   Jan-01-13 Tolush vs Botvinnik, 1945

Honza Cervenka: It was better for white to keep the Queens on the board. Maybe 30.Qh2!? deserved attention.

   Dec-27-12 G MacDonnell vs De Vere, 1872

Honza Cervenka: Lucky win for black as white missed a few forced wins in the course of this epic battle. 41...Kh5 was a mistake (41...Kf5! was better) which could have cost black the game after 42.Ne4! Kh6 (42...Qxd4 43.Ng3+, 44.Nf5+ and 45.Rg5#) 43.Ng3! Qd3 44.Rg4! and black has no ...

   Dec-24-12 V Inkiov vs Psakhis, 1982 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: Fine game by Inkiov but Psakhis was a bit too cooperative. I dislike 11...Ng5 and I think that it was the beginning of black's troubles in this game. But still I don't know how would have white proceed if black would have played for example 21...Nc6 or 24...f3 with idea ...

Dec-23-12 Karpov vs Ulf Andersson, 1980

Honza Cervenka: Good battle.

   Dec-23-12 M Kouvatsou vs D Samigullina, 2009

Honza Cervenka: 64.Kc3! leads to draw.

  chesstoplay: Hi Honza,

I just cast vote # 6846 (2/3/2011 1:50 PM CST USA).

My goal is to get Aneta over 7,000 votes.

You will always be able to tell her that she had the most friends world wide that were actually casting votes.

She will always know how respected her father was (is)!

You will be able to let her know that one good friend is better than many machines making other machines do electronic chores.

You are a good father, husband and friend to the World Team.

Oh, and by the way, you will also be able to tell Aneta that she had by far the prettiest baby photo!!

Finally, by my tally, Aneta wins becase she has you as a Dad.

Be well, my friend, and bring peace and joy to your daughter's life

Honza Cervenka: <cu8sfan> There is no reason to be sad. In fact, the Internet voting was just one part of the race. The second part of the competition was a voting with coupons printed in the newspaper. The final ranking was determined through the sum of the order of voting on the Internet and the order of voting by newspaper coupons. We were the fifth on the Internet but we took the second place in the other part of the race and it was sufficient for taking of the second place in whole competition because our main rivals (with exception of Alex Loukota who won both parts) badly underestimated the voting by coupons.:-)

morfishine: We haven't spoken before, but I'd like to say its a pleasure to have you on Team White for this exercise. Hopefully, it will be a fruitful affair. For that I have no doubt.

I am impressed with your rating(s). As for myself, I am working hard every day analyzing and scratching towards 1900. I have a goal of 2000 by years end. Lets show them a thing or two. :) Morf

Hesam7: <Honza> I came across some old comment of yours in Ivanchuk vs Topalov, 1995 and I have posted some analysis. The tactics were pretty fun!
Jul-29-11  MartijnvanWingerden: Hello Ms Cervenka. I noted that you play on the International Correspondence Chess Server so maybe you can help me.

I registered me a few weeks ago with my email-address on the ICCF site but i don't have the activation mail yet. So i tryed with my other email-address but that didn't work too. Do you know what the problem is?

LoveThatJoker: <Honza Cervenka> Someone replied to your post on this game: V Makogonov vs Keres, 1939

By the way, I have a question to ask you: Do you know where I can find additional infomation on Giovanni Leonardo Di Bona da Cutri?

Also, would you happen to know why all the games between him and Ruy Lopez have an incomplete score?

Honza Cervenka: <LoveThatJoker> I think that it was not a habit of the time to record complete scores of games, even those played between known masters. Chess manuscripts written by then chess masters usually for their patrons were focused mostly on the opening (along with endgames or chess problems) and that is why only some opening parts of games survived.

Benzol: <Honza> I've been trying to get date information on Game Collection: Mährisch-Ostrau 1923 so that a tournament page can be created for it. <thomastonk> has kindly provided information about rounds 1 to 10. Is there any chance you might know the dates rounds 11, 12 and 13 were played on? Thanks in advance.

:)

Benzol: <Honza> By consensus we think it should like this

Game Collection: Mährisch-Ostrau 1923

Hopefully it's OK now.

I was wondering, what ever happened to that baby photo contest your daughter joined in? Did she win?
