Critic Tells Sarah Silverman to Watch Her Mouth; Internet Tells Him Where to Stick It.

47 minutes ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

So Variety posted TV critic Brian Lowry's review of Sarah Silverman's upcoming HBO special, We Are Miracles and, yeah, it didn't go over so well.  Check out this sexist dum-dum @blowryontv http://t.co/1ROO8DZgpu— Sarah Thyre (@SarahThyre) November 21, 2013 The nut, so to speak, of Lowry's critique is that Silverman, whom he writes has "all manner of career-friendly gifts -- from her looks to solid acting chops" has sabotaged her own career by working blue:Comics often impress each other with that kind of bawdy fare (see The Aristocrats), but Silverman frequently seems to be playing more toward those peers and a loyal cadre of fans than a broader audience that's apt to be turned off by the questionable stuff, which feels more about shock value than cleverness. And if she really think saying "c--t" repeatedly is a form of artistic expression, more power to her, but in commercial terms, »

'Pretty Little Liars' Season 4B: Whose body was found? Ep dishes the dirt

51 minutes ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Pretty Little Liars" returns in less than 50 days -- but it seems like an eternity, right fans? Executive producer Oliver Goldstick is here to offer a small goodie about what's in store for the back-half of Season 4.

We tell Goldstick that our most burning "Pll" question is, if Alison Dilaurentis is alive, whose body was found at Maya's house in Season 1? He obviously can't tell us, but we have to know if Season 4B will answer that question.

"I can't say that we'll answer it, but we'll certainly explore it," says Goldstick. "You might not get a complete answer yet, but you will certainly get a ride trying to find out."

So the season will drop little hints?

"Yes," he says.

What do you think, gang? Is it the infamous twin theory that's been floating around?

"Pretty Little Liars" returns Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on ABC Family. »

Joan Rivers Back to Warring with Writers Guild over ‘Fashion Police’

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The six-week-old peace between Joan Rivers and the Writers Guild of America East has collapsed.

The WGA East, which has been backing the strike by writers on E! network’s “Fashion Police,” blasted Rivers on Thursday for a recent interview in which she backed  E!’s position — that any unionization election would have to be administered by the National Labor Relations Board before it agrees to negotiate a contract. The guild has asserted that the demand is a stalling tactic.

Rivers also said in the interview with Splitsider that the situation is  “a stupid sloppy mess” and added, “Everyone is posturing, like, ‘My dick is bigger than your dick.’”

Rivers and the guild had announced on Oct. 7 that she would back the guild’s position and that disciplinary charges against the “Fashion Police” host would be dropped.

In a statement Thursday, WGA East president Michael Winship called the comments “derisive and crude” and added, »

Sony CEO: Entertainment Is “Crucial” To Company

1 hour ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

CEO Kazuo Hirai just gave his movie, TV, and music enterprises a strong endorsement as he kicked off the company’s long-awaited investor briefing about the businesses. “I know that the whole of Sony is greater than the sum of its parts,” he says calling entertainment “a core part of Sony” that is “crucial to our future growth.” He says Sony has had 89 No. 1 movies since 2000, 38 TV series produced in the U.S. this year, 1,500 music artists, and is the No. 1 music publisher. But the picture segment generated a loss in the most recent quarter, and “some movies just didn’t perform as we had estimated” adding that the operation “must get better.”  He said that the unit will become more profitable and will revamp the process of greenlighting films. Strategic priorities for entertainment include investing in “fast growing and high margin businesses,” building existing libraries, creating “compelling new franchises, »

Ad Agencies Working Overtime On Shows, Not Spots

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Hollywood is filled with executives who honed their chops on Madison Avenue. Dick Wolf, builder of the famous “Law & Order” franchise, toiled away at an ad agency writing slogans for Crest toothpaste. Adam Stotsky, president of NBCUniversal’s Esquire, once worked for a big agency called Fallon. Sometimes, an ad man likes to dabble in a glitzier world: Phil Dusenberry, a creative executive at Bbdo known for his work on Pepsi, adapted the script for 1984 baseball film “The Natural.”

Now those worlds are set to mix even further. Ad agencies have long worked to produce various pieces of video content, even full-blown TV programs, but the growth of video platforms has heightened demand for those services, which have been seen as a side business for agencies.

“The agency model is evolving,” said Jon Hamm, chief creative and innovation officer of Momentum Worldwide, an agency owned by Interpublic Group that typically »

J.J. Abrams: Smallscreen Influences Bigscreen Work

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

As a producer, director and writer who’s whipped old franchises into shape for the new century (“Star Trek,” “Mission: Impossible”), then spun ripping original yarns (“Super 8”) with an equally deft touch, it’s no surprise that J.J. Abrams is the go-to man in Hollywood these days.

But Abrams’ early success came out of television, from such shows as “Felicity” and “Lost,” and as this year’s recipient of the Intl. Emmy Founders Award says, he owes a lot to TV for keeping his approach to features fresh.

“Part of the joy of television is being a part of something that is an organic, living, breathing, evolving thing,” he says. “It’s an evolution, and you’re constantly making decisions based on the results you’re getting — it’s a whole other form of entertainment (than movies) that way.”

Working in TV gave Abrams insight into keeping movie budgets under control. »
