Fernandez is the first figure skater from Spain to take a medal at an ISU Championship (gold at 2013 Europeans). He is also the first Spanish skater to win a medal at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating (silver at Skate Canada 2011) and to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, where he took bronze in Dec 2011. Fernandez is the first man to represent Spain in figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games since 1956 when Dario Villalba competed. He landed three quadruple jumps (two Salchows and one toeloop) at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Dec 2012 and at the European Championships 2013. Fernandez switched coaches in spring 2011 and moved to Canada for training. Coach Brian Orser is the 1984 and 1988 Olympic silver medalist.
