Disarmament

The issue of how to control the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is at the forefront of international debate.  New Zealand takes an active role and seeks to ensure that the importance of disarmament continues to be recognised, along with initiatives toward preventing proliferation.  New Zealand also continues to play an active part in negotiations on the control of conventional weapons. more

Environment

Our main focus is on those areas of the growing international environment agenda that impact on New Zealand’s domestic environment policies and where significant trade and economic implications have been identified.  These include coordination of international negotiations on issues such as climate change, biosafety and biodiversity, oceans and endangered species, and a range of sustainable development issues. more

Human Rights

In selected areas of the multilateral agenda New Zealand plays a part as a good international citizen as an expression of our national values.  The promotion and protection of human rights is one such area.  We engage in United Nations bodies responsible for promoting the rights of, for example, women, children and those with disabilities.  more

International Security

New Zealand addresses its security concerns by working through bilateral, regional and global channels to promote understanding of its interests and perspectives, to broaden the practical frameworks for dealing with issues, and to negotiate legal instruments through which to regulate the behaviour of states. more
