New Zealand's first Ambassador to Afghanistan resident in Kabul, Neville Reilly, presented his letters of credence at a ceremony on 4 July 2010. The ceremony, at the Presidential Palace in Kabul, officially confirmed Ambassador Reilly in the role of New Zealand's senior representative in Afghanistan. Gallipoli was a seminal event in the history of our nation, and many suggest that New Zealand's distinct sense of nationhood was born out of the scars of this 1915 campaign. The annual ANZAC Gallipoli commemorations in Turkey constitute one of the largest annual off-shore gatherings of New Zealanders and Australians and attendance has grown dramatically in recent years. A number of New Zealand agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Veteran's Affairs New Zealand, are involved each year in working with Australian and Turkish Authorities on the organisation of commemoration services on the Gallipoli peninsula. more
