October 31, 2013 Gallo Center Scientific Advisory Board Member George
F. Koob was named as the new Director of the National Institute on
Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. As Director of the NIAAA, Dr. Koob
will oversee a budget of $458 million that supports alcohol-related
research in areas including genetics, neuroscience, epidemiology,
prevention and treatment. In addition, the NIAAA works with other
research institutes and federal and state programs on alcohol-related
issues

The UCSF-affiliated Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center has
issued a second round of grants under its U.S. Army-funded research
program intended to accelerate the discovery and development of new
medications to treat alcohol and substance abuse in the context of
post-traumatic stress and combat injury.
