STV Edinburgh is a local television channel based in Edinburgh which launched on 12 January 2015.[1][2] It is one of two local television channels owned by STV Group plc, along with STV Glasgow.

History[edit]

STV were awarded local TV licences in January 2013 to operate two digital television channels, under the working titles of GTV and ETV, in Glasgow and Edinburgh respectively, for up to 12 years.[3] STV will work in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University and Edinburgh Napier University on the channels.[4]

STV Edinburgh launched at 19:00 on Monday 12 January 2015, originally airing every day from midday until around midnight. Its sister station STV Glasgow launched first, on 2 June 2014.

The channel soon extended its hours in March 2015, along with sister channel STV Glasgow. The channels now began broadcasting at 7am on weekdays, starting with children's programming slot "Weans' World". On weekends, the channels begin at 7am with the rolling STV News text service - "Weans' World" airs from 9am.

Programming[edit]

STV Edinburgh airs a locally focused schedule of new, archived and imported programming, including a daily magazine show, an expanded STV News service, features, documentaries and drama.

On weekdays, key programmes include The Fountainbridge Show, a 60-minute topical magazine show airing at 19:00 each weeknight. STV News is broadcast throughout the day, beginning with a rolling news text service from midday. Hourly local updates are then broadcast from 15:00. STV News at Eight is broadcast across both STV Edinburgh and STV Glasgow. A fully local STV News at Ten rounds up the days stories in the city. STV Edinburgh also features simulcasts of the East edition of STV News at Six and Scotland Tonight.

Other bespoke programming for the channel includes Peter and Roughie's Football Show, shown weeknights at 18:30 (a replay of a radio phone-in broadcast on Central FM and Your Radio), interview series My Life in Ten Pictures and entertainment shows including Grass Roots Music and Ch-Ewen the Fat.[5]

STV Edinburgh also airs archived drama series including Taggart, Take the High Road and Rebus alongside the acclaimed Polish World War II drama Czas honoru (Days of Honour) and the comedy drama series High Times. The station has pledged to broadcast at least an hour a week of non-English language programming.

The Fountainbridge Show[edit]

The Fountainbridge Show is the flagship magazine programme on STV Edinburgh, broadcasting live from STV's Edinburgh offices in the Fountainbridge area. First broadcast on the channel's launch-night, the show originally aired from 19:00 until 20:30 every weeknight. Former radio DJ Ewen Cameron and Hayley Matthews, previously a presenter on STV's The Nightshift present the show. Zara Janjua and George Ward act as roving reporters.

Since the show launched, its running time has been cut from 90 minutes down to 60 minutes in March 2015, now airing from 19.00 to 20.00.[6]

On weekdays, The Fountainbridge Show is repeated throughout the day on both STV Edinburgh and STV Glasgow, as is the latter flagship magazine programme "The Riverside Show". At the weekend, highlights from both programmes are shown as part of the "See What You Missed" and "Tea for a Tenner" strands.
