101.7 WSFM (call sign: 2UUS) is a FM band radio station broadcasting in Sydney, Australia. Its main content is commercial music, in particular classic hits from the 1960s to the Early 2000s, with a greater focus on the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The station is owned by the Australian Radio Network, a 50/50 joint venture between Clear Channel Communications of the U.S., and APN News & Media Ltd. Its target market is all people aged 39–54.

WSFM's main frequency is 101.7 MHz on the FM band, with two repeaters in the outer suburbs of Sydney: 88.3 MHz in the Macarthur region, and 99.1 MHz centred in the Richmond/Hawkesbury region. It previously transmitted on 1224 kHz on the AM band; this frequency is now used by print-handicapped radio station 2RPH.

Music

WSFM's former catchlines were Sydney's Classic Hits and Real music, real variety. WSFM generally plays pop music from the last four decades as well as current classic hits.

History

Liverpool Broadcasting and Transmitting Co Pty Ltd was granted an AM radio license in the late 1970s, specifically to serve the Western Suburbs of Sydney. 2WS began broadcasting on 23 November 1978 from temporary studios in a relocated cottage at 2 Leabons Lane, Seven Hills with a 5 kW transmitter located at nearby Prospect.

The studios subsequently moved, in October 1979, into a purpose built complex behind the old cottage in Leabons Lane. The original building was demolished, with the material donated to charity.

In the early 90's the station was granted an FM licence covering the full Sydney metropolitan area. Its new transmitter site was located at Artarmon, in northern Sydney. The official callsign was changed to 2UUS (using a literal 'double-U' to compensate for the extra letter required), although the station still identified as 2WS until 2001, when they changed their on-air name to WSFM.

2WS, 1224 on the A.M. band converted to the FM band and began broadcasting as 2WS-FM on 101.7 MHz in 1993.

WSFM now broadcasts from studios at North Ryde. The building also houses facilities for KIIS 106.5 and The Edge 96.1, both also owned by the Australian Radio Network.

The previous studios in Seven Hills are now serviced by Christian/Adult Contemporary radio station, Hope 103.2.

Jonesy & Amanda in the Morning

Jonesy & Amanda in the Morning is WSFM's flagship, and best known programme. Hosted by Amanda Keller and Brendan Jones the show is an informative and entertaining breakfast show. The show rates strongly in the baby boomer target market. News and weather is presented by Sarah Forster, sport with Jim Dolan and traffic with Vic Lorrusso. The show runs weekdays from 5:30-9am.

There is a daily "best of" program Jonesy and Amanda's Afternoon Delight which airs from 6-7pm weekdays

A weekly "best of" called Jonesy & Amanda's Weekend Jam airs on Sunday mornings.

The No Repeat Workday

The No Repeat Workday is presented by Ron E Sparks (9am-12pm), Jason Staveley (12-4pm) & Lars Peterson (4pm-7pm). News updates are on the hour and presented by Beth Link (10am-1pm) and Mia Agius (2pm-7pm).

The Big Chill

The Big Chill airs on Sunday Mornings and plays hits from the 1960s and 1970s and is hosted by Ron E Sparks.

Your Song

Your Song, presented by the 'love god' Richard Mercer, who plays your song and tells your story on air from 7-11pm Monday-Thursday

Newsreaders

WS FM News claims to be "Sydney's most comprehensive FM News network". The bulletins are broadcast through the resources of ARN Group News, and uses ARN News anchors, but they present for WSFM solely. Renee Smith is the current news director as of 2011. She replaced Glenn Daniel. WSFM News has its own theme song. When a bulletin starts they cross straight to traffic.
