MSc Medical Statistics Scholarship Fund: For Students From Special Circumstance Countries
The MSc in Medical Statistics contributes to the improvement of health worldwide through the pursuit of excellence in training future medical statisticians. The one year course:
- provides comprehensive tuition in statistical theory and its application to health and medicine with special reference to clinical trials and epidemiology;
- is established at the forefront of medical statistics training, and
- enjoys an outstanding international reputation drawing students from all over the world.
Since its launch in 1968, many alumni have gone on to leading positions in the field and have made internationally recognized contributions to medical research.
The need for a Scholarship Fund
- Worldwide shortage of trained medical statisticians
- Limited number of institutions that offer training
- Cost of studying, living in and travelling to London can be prohibitive, especially for overseas students. In 2008, the annual expenditure on fees, course materials and living expenses averaged £30,000
- Limited scholarships for overseas students
Currently, only one scholarship is regularly available for students from special circumstance countries. The number of high quality applicants for scholarships invariably far exceeds the number available. For example, in 2007 there were over 90 suitably qualified applicants for one scholarship. Thus, every year, excellent applicants are unable to take up a place on the course because they cannot afford to attend.
How the Scholarship Fund works
To address this shortfall and to mark the 40th anniversary of the MSc, the School has inaugurated a Scholarship Fund to provide much needed support to applicants from special circumstance countries to attend the MSc.
The Scholarship Fund:
Will offer support for fees and/or living expenses to excellent applicants as funds become available, and is administered by a Scholarship Committee whose members are:
