John Kropf is Foundation Senior Scholar at the Information Accountability Foundation working on issues of global accountability and strategic privacy. Prior to joining the foundation, he was deputy counsel for privacy and information governance at Reed Elsevier.

Mr. Kropf previously worked as a Career Member of the U.S. Senior Executive Service, serving as the Deputy Chief Privacy Officer for the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Privacy Office and Senior Adviser on international privacy policy. Before joining DHS, Kropf worked for a decade as an international lawyer in the U.S. State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser. He also served two years with the American Embassy in Turkmenistan as Country Director for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Mr. Kropf is the author of the Guide to U.S. Government Practice on Global Sharing of Personal Information as well as numerous articles on global and strategic privacy issues.

He earned his B.A. from Denison University and his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
