About the Author

Ezra Levant is a lawyer, journalist, and political activist, and a talk host for SUN TV. First of all, I am someone who actually works in gas - not in fracking itself, but on wells that have been fracked. I think we are fortunate that there are resources like this to clear the waters on a subject that really shouldn't be controversial. Levant's book does a good job of refuting arguments against fracking, and shows how the gas produced actually displaces sources of fossil fuels that are much more harmful to the environment, the economy, and political stability.

However, the tone of the book bothered me at points. For example, Levant rolls his eyes at global warming in a couple parts of the book, without involving it in his central arguments. Back in high school, I learned that this is basic debate error referred to as "begging the question". The pervasiveness of global warming is an entirely different matter of debate, and bringing it up as an aside basically amounts to little more than taunting. There are other aspects to his tone that are "taunting" in nature, particularly in how he refers to his opponents (I can't remember if he used the term "hippy" or not, but it amounts to that at times). It makes the book feel more like propaganda than an accounting of facts, even though he brings up many well-sourced arguments. I can understand why he would want to take on that tone, because the sloppy propaganda-like nature of his opponents' arguments are often far-more pronounced, but I wish Levant would have taken the higher road.

Ultimately, Levant's tone will be off-putting for those with mainstream environmental views, even though his actual arguments should be very appealing to them, and thus there is a lot of wasted potential with regards to the book's ability to sway public opinion.Read more ›

The book lays out a scientific, political and ethical case in favour of fracking technology to solve many of the national and trans-national issues with energy scarcity. The author makes a good case that much of the opposition to fracking is based on biased information from special interest groups including, but not limited to the economic and political interests of foreign totalitarian regimes (Russia and Qatar for example). Overall the book provides a solid primer on the current practice, application and implications of fracking technology in the current energy environment.

Finally a book that presents the 'other side' of the argument in a factual and competent way. Ezra points out that the US EPA head in the Obama administration who was an avowed anti-fracker, testified before a Congressional panel that indeed she was unable to find any verifiable cases where fracking polluted groundwater in the US. The author makes the case for countries like Poland and Ukraine to gain energy security through fracking and how Russia is doing all in its power to stop them - covertly and overtly. Other countries like Germany, UK, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and France all have the potential to get out from under Russian's energy control by adopting fracking. Israel also has the chance of energy security if they frack shale gas off their coast.
Ezra, creditably puts to rest the arguments used against fracking seen in Jeff Fox's movie, showing Jeff fabricated just about everything in his movies with the exception of the banjo music.

Great book, it focuses on the geopolitical ramifications of the war on fracking.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation will have to run another couple of dozen anti-fracking propaganda pieces to help their buddy Putin's war on European energy independence and to help him control the former USSR states by controlling their access to energy.

If you ever wondered why there is such a media firestorm and feeding frenzy over fracking this book explains just what the stakes are for the countries threatened by Russia's control of natural gas.
As Ezra says, gas is power, as in political power.

Interesting factoid from the book: Russia spills the equivalent of a BP gulf oil spill every 8 weeks.

Levant's writing style is right up my alley. Peppered with sarcasm and direct jabs to make reading about the political, social and economic facets of fracking - fun. The concepts are delivered in a way that you will fully understand the issues, including why certain folk don't agree with it, but also why you should. Underpinned by the fact that increased use of NG has displaced a significant run of coal equating to a significant drop in GHG and other pollutants. Many stories the greens don't want you to know about. After this, read Ethical Oil.

I totally agree with the author regarding the benefits of Fracking. I however disagree with the bashing of everybody who believes that the burning of fossil fuels is not good for our planet. We should welcome and embrace anything which helps reduce our carbon footprint and shale gas is certainly one such thing. However, we must continue to strive for renewable energy as our ultimate goal. I have worked for 35 years in oil & gas industry and firmly believe that unless we find alternatives to fossil fuels the environmental damage will only exacerbate once about one billion Chinese and Indians start using energy even half the level of the Western countries. In addition to the unnecessary aggressive tone of the book, the book seems to include some information which is either wrong or speculative. The United States is certainly a much bigger producer of oil than "the thirteenth largest" (page 13), or Saudi Arabia covering for a huge Persian Gulf oil spill for 17 years. Persian Gulf is a small body of water with hundreds of ships (oil tankers, merchant vessels, military ships and fishing vessels) plying 24/7. You just can't hide anything there.
