TheStreet (Sep. 23, 2015) — Ad blocking on iPhones and iPads may cost digital publishers around $1 billion in lost advertising, that's according to the latest analysts report from UBS. The number may seem like a large one but it represents only 0.5 percent of total global spend on digital advertising and 1.3 percent of mobile spend. Both UBS and JPMorgan have said that fears over advertising losses have been overblown. Here's why: Ads can only be blocked in Apple's (AAPL) Safari browser, which holds a mere 22% of global web traffic. Ads within apps cannot be blocked and the majority of users spend more time within apps than browsing the mobile web. Users need to manually download and install ad blockers, which will only work on the latest Apple products and iOS 9 software. Some sites may be harder hit than others depending on where there traffic comes from and how digitally engaged and tech savvy their readers are. UBS expects that Adobe (ADBE) and Yahoo (YHOO) will be the most exposed to ad blocking, given their heavy desktop traffic. Twitter (TWTR) and Facebook (FB) on the other hand are expected to have the least exposure, thanks to their heavy mobile and app use. Video provided by TheStreet ... watch video

The new Infinix model will be able to run on Android software and will retail for around $87 in Nigerian stores and online in Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco and Ivory Coast. TheStreet (Aug. 25, 2014) — There are 600 million people actively using WhatsApp. According to its founder, Jan Koum, the mobile app got 100 million more active users in just the last four months. Koum was quick to point out that active users are people using the app regularly. WhatsApp gained traction in every major region in the world. It's growing the fastest in Brazil, Russia and Mexico, and a tenth of the active users are from India. Facebook acquired WhatsApp at the beginning of this year for $19 billion. It expressed interests in monetizing WhatsApp better and is reportedly working on file sharing and call features. However, WhatsApp's most valuable part for Facebook is the database. Top traffic and the number of conversations allow Facebook to extract marketable information on the users' likings. Mark Zuckerberg said, "[WhatsApp] is the only app we've ever seen with higher engagement than Facebook itself." WhatsApp can also borrow what its competitor WeChat has been doing. WeChat took over the smartphone chatting arena in Asia by storm last year and it sells special stickers and emoticons for users to share with friends. Of course, WeChat contributes the most to its parent company Tencent's bottom line by driving traffic to everything else Tencent owns, and Facebook wants the same. Video game sales, including hardware and accessories, jumped 16% from a year earlier to $514.3 million, according to market researcher NPD Group. That increase was driven by the continued success of Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, the latest iterations of their gaming consoles which had near simultaneous releases last November. PlayStation 4 held its lead as top-selling console, a spot it has commanded over Xbox for seven consecutive months. Sony said it has sold more than 10 million units worldwide so far. TheStreet (Aug. 7, 2014) — Google says it's starting to use HTTPS encryption as a ranking signal as part of its effort to make the Internet safer. Google said for now, it's a lightweight signal, affecting fewer than 1% of global queries and carrying less weight than other signals like high-quality content. The company said it's giving webmasters time to switch to HTTPS because in the future, it may decide to strengthen the ranking signal. Websites using HTTP may start to slip down in Google's search results if they don't switch over to more secure encryption. Google said it encourages all Web sites to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep Web users more secure. Video provided by TheStreet ... watch video
