What is EurekAlert!?

EurekAlert! is an online, global news service operated by AAAS, the science society. EurekAlert! provides a central place through which universities, medical centers, journals, government agencies, corporations and other organizations engaged in research can bring their news to the media. EurekAlert! also offers its news and resources to the public. EurekAlert! features news and resources focused on all areas of science, medicine and technology.

EurekAlert!'s office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. US Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). Submissions or inquiries received by our staff during office hours will be processed the same day. Submissions received outside of office hours will be processed on the next business day.

Using EurekAlert!

Public Users

The EurekAlert! archives are freely available to the public. No registration is necessary to search the archives, and any user can look up information posted to EurekAlert! by browsing our news pages or by typing specific information into the Search. Please keep in mind that the releases on EurekAlert! are posted from various research institutions, corporations, government and nonprofit organizations. Any questions regarding the content of a release should be addressed to the contact person for that particular release.

Journalists

Reporters and freelancers may register for access to the embargoed section of EurekAlert!. The embargoed section contains releases that have not yet become public information. Once the embargo date has passed, these releases are rolled into the public archive. Advance access to releases is vital in late-breaking news stories. For more information, please see Registration.

Public Relations/Media Relations Personnel

Public information officers (PIOs) may register to post releases to EurekAlert!. A public information officer is typically anyone who performs the tasks of a media relations or public relations officer. There is no cost to register, but before you can begin posting releases, your institution must have a subscription to EurekAlert!. To register, please see Registration. Redistributing EurekAlert! press releases

EurekAlert! and its publisher, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, encourage the broad dissemination of research news to strengthen science communications worldwide. However, we request that users refrain from duplicating EurekAlert! content on other websites in a wholesale or "content aggregation" fashion. News releases on EurekAlert! are intended to support bona fide news coverage by reporters registered with EurekAlert!.

Users may not reprint or reproduce the press releases that appear on EurekAlert! in a wholesale or "content aggregation" fashion without permission. EurekAlert! and AAAS reserve the right to determine appropriate uses of EurekAlert! content, at our sole discretion.

EurekAlert! also offers a number of RSS feeds, which can be used to feed press release headlines from EurekAlert! directly onto your site. Please refer to the RSS feeds section for access to the feeds and guidelines regarding their use.

How do I find information about a particular topic on EurekAlert!?

Searching the EurekAlert! archives is the best way to find information on a particular topic. There are two ways to search for information. To perform a simple search, simply enter a search term into the search box located on every EurekAlert! page. Search terms may be keywords, institutions or regions. The Advanced Search link is located in the header at the top of each EurekAlert! page. The advanced search option allows users to set more specific parameters for their search results. Users may search for information by typing in one of the following: a keyword, the name of the submitting institution, a region of the submitting institution, the research journal, the name of the organization funding the research, the date for release of the information or the name of the meeting at which the research was presented and release date. Every press release posted to EurekAlert! is accessible through EurekAlert!'s search function.

Registration

Do I need to register to use EurekAlert!?

To search the public archives, or view the latest public releases, you do not need to register.

Journalists wishing to access embargoed releases, which contain information that has not yet become public, do need to register. There is no cost, but you must meet specific criteria.

If you wish to register, please review the Registration Criteria before continuing to the registration form.

Public information officers (PIOs) wishing to post releases to the site do need to register. There is no cost to register, but your institution will need a subscription before you can begin posting information to the site.

How do I register?

Please read the Registration Criteria before continuing to the registration form.

To register, complete the online registration form. You will receive an e-mail confirming that your registration has been sent to the EurekAlert! staff. Within one business day, you will receive an e-mail from a member of the EurekAlert! staff either welcoming you to EurekAlert! or asking you for more information. Provided you meet all of the registration criteria, you will also receive your username and password via e-mail.

How many people from my company/institution can register?

There is no limit to the number of people who can register from a company/institution.

Please note that EurekAlert! does not allow the sharing of passwords. Therefore, every journalist who needs access to embargoed materials should register individually. Every public information officer (PIO) who needs to post information should also register individually.

Does it cost anything to register?

There is no cost to register for EurekAlert!, however, certain requirements must be met. Please read the Registration Criteria before continuing to the registration form. Registration is free for public information officers (PIOs), however your institution/company must be a subscriber before you can post releases to the site. There is a cost for subscription. Passwords

What if I forget my password?

If you are a registered user and have forgotten your password, please proceed to Forgot Password? on the main page and fill out the simple form with your username. Within a few minutes a new password will be e-mailed to you. If you have forgotten your username, please contact webmaster@eurekalert.org or call us at 1-202-326-6716.

EurekAlert! Search

How can a firewall affect my ability to search on EurekAlert!?

If your system administrator has firewalls set up restricting access to unfamiliar ports on the Internet, you may not be able to perform a search on EurekAlert!. If this is the case, your browser will return a message indicating that it is unable to reach the server every time you perform a search. If you experience this problem, please ask your system administrator to open up traffic from search.eurekalert.org.

E-mail Alerts

Does EurekAlert! offer e-mail alerts?

EurekAlert! offers e-mail alerts only to registered reporters and public information officers. Others who would like to receive e-mail alerts about the latest science, medicine and technology news posted on EurekAlert! are encouraged to sign up for Google Alerts. To receive daily / weekly alerts on EurekAlert! research releases from Google Alerts:
  • Go to Google Alerts, http://www.google.com/alerts;
  • In the "Search query" field, type EurekAlert! and specific keywords;
  • In the "Result type" field, click on News;
  • In the "How often" field, highlight the frequency with which you would like to receive the e-mail alerts;
  • In the "How many" field, highlight your preference for the number of results you would like to receive;
  • In the "Deliver to" field, type in your e-mail address and click on "Create Alert."

Embargo Policies

What is an embargo?

When applied to published material, an embargo is a prohibition against publicizing information before a certain date. By placing an embargo on the dissemination of research that is scheduled to be published, EurekAlert! can release information early, giving journalists the time necessary to write accurate and well-researched articles on a given topic. By respecting the embargo, journalists assure themselves of continued access to information in advance of publication.

Posting of embargoed material to the directory

Material is posted by registered public information officers (PIOs) from institutions, universities and peer-reviewed journals, and is subject to the specific embargo times, dates and policies set by the PIOs and/or EurekAlert!. Journalists with approved access to this directory are bound to honor all the embargo restrictions. Material that has passed its embargo date and time is considered public information and is released to the public homepage for viewing.

How does my institution purchase a subscription to EurekAlert!?

The subscription process is very simple. A public information officer from your institution must complete the appropriate subscription form, then submit it to EurekAlert!. Your institution may begin posting eligible news releases and other information on EurekAlert! as soon as EurekAlert! has received the completed forms. Payment may follow if necessary.

An organization associated with my institution already subscribes to EurekAlert!. Does my institution need to purchase a separate subscription?

Under the EurekAlert! subscription policy, an institution is defined as one entity supported by its own public relations function. An institution representing multiple organizations may require multiple subscriptions. Medical institutions affiliated with a university but supported by a separate public relations function must subscribe individually. Journals are handled on a case-by-case basis. Posting of information on EurekAlert!

What kind of information is posted on EurekAlert!?

News releases on EurekAlert! announce the latest findings and research advances in science, medicine, technology, health and the social sciences. Also available are releases relating to grant announcements, prizes awarded to scientists or journalists, press conferences, scientific meetings and newly published books. These may include links to supplementary material. Other resources on EurekAlert! include lists of experts, contacts to scientific organizations and links to the home pages of EurekAlert! contributors.

Primary contributors include universities and colleges, scientific and medical journals, companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.

Who may submit?

Public information officers (PIOs) wishing to post releases to the site need to register. To register, please visit the online registration form. There is no cost to register, but your institution will need a subscription before you can begin posting information to the site.
