Big Ten basketball makes itself at home on East Coast

All the league’s men’s basketball coaches and many of the best players gathered for the first Big Ten Media Day held on the East Coast. Even more significant: The conference tournament will take place in Washington from March 8-12.

Villanova selected Big East coaches’ preseason pick

The Wildcats were the overwhelming choice of the Big East coaches as the preseason No. 1. Xavier, which finished in last season’s final Top Ten , was second followed by Creighton, Georgetown, defending Big East Tournament champion Seton Hall, Butler, Marquette, St. John’s, Providence and DePaul.

Vintage Dwight Howard sends block into first row

Last year, center Dwight Howard averaged just 13.7 points per game with the Houston Rockets, his lowest per game total since his rookie season with the Orlando Magic. But Howard plays with the Atlanta Hawks now, his hometown team, and the belief was that may fire him up for this season.

Uncertainty over Hurricane Matthew still affecting sports

Fear of the damage that powerful Hurricane Matthew may cause prompted two college football postponements Thursday, and had the NFL plotting just-in-case scenarios for games scheduled in Tampa and Miami this weekend.

Hurricane Matthew shaking up sports docket

Hurricane Matthew’s looming impact on Florida and the rest of the East Coast had basketball, hockey and football teams on edge Wednesday, with some colleges canceling or postponing games while the NFL held out hope the storm would veer off before a crowded slate of Sunday contests.
