Grubauer records first career shutout in Capitals’ 3-0 win over Avalanche

It was a night the started with a tribute to goaltender Braden Holtby, the 2015-16 Vezina Trophy winner and recent winner of his 150th win. But the night ended with a celebration of a different goaltender, backup Philipp Grubauer, who recorded his first career shutout in the Washington Capitals’ 3-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Penguins begin title defense with win over Capitals

Phil Kessel beat Braden Holtby in the fourth round of a shootout and the Pittsburgh Penguins began the defense of their Stanley Cup with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night.

Penguins star Sidney Crosby diagnosed with concussion

Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby has been diagnosed with another concussion just days before an NHL season in which the Penguins are expected to make a strong run at repeating as Stanley Cup champion.

Uncertainty over Hurricane Matthew still affecting sports

Fear of the damage that powerful Hurricane Matthew may cause prompted two college football postponements Thursday, and had the NFL plotting just-in-case scenarios for games scheduled in Tampa and Miami this weekend.

Hurricane Matthew’s looming impact on Florida and the rest of the East Coast had basketball, hockey and football teams on edge Wednesday, with some colleges canceling or postponing games while the NFL held out hope the storm would veer off before a crowded slate of Sunday contests.
