Packing for a plane trip? Here's what you can and can't put in your carry-on

With spring break and vacation season upon us, more people are taking to the skies. And with most airlines charging at least $25 to check one bag, confining most of your goods to a carry-on bag is an appealing option.

But the rules for what you can and cannot carry on can lead to your pricey perfume or lotion getting thrown in the trash. How to avoid the annoyance? By reviewing the most updated TSA rules before packing.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says to remember the "3-1-1 rule": You can take whatever shampoo, hair spray or perfume you want on the plane as long as each is in a container that's 3 ounces or less, and all are encased in one quart-size plastic bag (one bag per person). "If you want a smooth experience, following that rule up front will make it easier for everyone," Farbstein said.

Here are some other tips for successfully navigating the security lines.

* Proper containers: Though most hotels provide shampoo and other bath items, sometimes you can't leave home without your favorites. "People will try to go through with their favorite brand of toothpaste, which comes in a 6.5-ounce tube and there's a little left, and they think it's OK," Farbstein said. Target and CVS have travel aisles with empty 3-ounce bottles and security-friendly sizes of some brands.

* Sharp objects: Large scissors, pocket knives and Swiss Army knives aren't allowed, but you can bring nail clippers, nail files, tweezers and cuticle cutters onboard. Disposable razors for men and women are also permitted, blades and all. These items should be kept stowed in your bag during the security check.

* Makeup: Yes, nail polish, lipstick and foundation do fall under the liquid/gel rule. Luckily, most of it is already less than 3 ounces, so you just have to stick it in the plastic bag. Almost all major perfume brands, such as Burberry, Clinique and Chanel, sell travel-size roll-on versions. Check stores like Sephora and Ulta for your favorite brand.

* Sunscreen: It's a must for sun worshippers, but it usually comes in huge bottles that are not carry-on friendly. Some brands like Banana Boat sell travel sizes, but the tube would be empty after one trip to the beach. Farbstein recommends just buying sunscreen once you get to your destination. "People forget, every town has a pharmacy or convenience store where they can pick up a few things," she said.
